Safari and Zimbra

Hi all,
long time lurker here…
We're running Zimbra here at work as our intranet based mail service. I use Safari 6.1 (Lion, 2006 white MB) to connect, but response time to keystrokes is getting slower and slower the longer away I am from a system shutdown. On Chrome, there is no such lag.

Other than Lastpass and Click-to-Flash there are no other Safari extensions installed. What could cause this?
