Safari back arrow disappeared

Click on a Google search result link in Safari. After reviewing the selected webpage I used to be able to press the back arrow to go back the Google search results. No longer. There is no back button when I click on a page link. This happens on all websites. I have to re-enter the search terms.

Still works in Firefox, Chrome.

Any way to get this back button functionality back?
 
Right-click the Toolbar in Safari, click Customize Toolbar and add the back/forward buttons to the toolbar again by dragging it into the toolbar area.
