When dragging a bookmark into a folder it automatically opens and reveals all the contents. It also forces all the list further down the sidebar.
Is there a way to stop this?

No, but as your mouse pointer is over the folder because you've just dropped the bookmark into it, you can just click and it will collapse the folder.

Of course, but it doesn't make it right.

Other browsers allow for simple drag and drop without this annoying action.

They also provide greater ability to manage bookmarks. Maybe one day Safari will get there.

Sorry, you asked whether it was possible to stop it; it isn't. Whether that's right or wrong is up to you. I'm just giving you an option that will take literally one click.

I much prefer the way Safari handles bookmarks than a browser like Firefox does.

Thanks for answering the question. And of course, everyone is entitled to their opinions.

Safari is fine for dragging one bookmark...but if one needs to organize say 30+ bookmarks, it's not ideal from a UI perspective. I wish Safari provided an option to turn it off and on collapsing folders.

Why not use the Edit Bookmarks option in the Bookmarks menu? Alt/Option + Cmd + B. That should give you folders that don't expand etc.

Even in Edit Bookmarks, when I drag and drop a bookmark over a folder, the folder expands automatically every time.

Maybe you're on a newer version of Safari?
I'm on Version 14.1.2

It's not a problem if one adds a bookmark directly into a folder when prompted.

But often I'll quickly bookmark a site to Favourites.
So I end up with a large list of bookmarks that I later organize into proper folders.
That's when it becomes annoying.

I will submit feedback to Apple. Thanks again.
