It seems I've always hit the + sign next to the address window to bookmark something. It would then drop a pane and let me choose where to put that bookmark.
For some reason the "+" sign there seems broken or is putting them somewhere I can't find or assign them.
Is it me, or did this feature recently disappear while making everything "better"?

Hit the button and hold it ;)

If you don't hold it, the bookmarks goes to the reading list automatically.

when did this start happening? can i get the old way in a preference? I guess I hold it now then scroll to the applicable folder? UGH, Apple needs to stop hiring 16 year olds to dream up new ways to do the something! Getting like Facebook, I'm resisting upgrades these days because of the changes that seem to have no benefit other than it's a new way!

PS thanks for the help!

Far from here
This came with Safari 6.1.

I don't think you can get the old way in a preference.

When the (new) side bar is displayed (hit the Bookmarks button), you can drag and drop a bookmark from the address bar to a bookmark folder.

You can rearrange the bookmarks in the side bar, or hit Alt + Cmd + B.
