the difference to me, is that tabs also provide a visual representation that you have other tabs open. So eg if I'm reading macrumors and have three threads open in tabs, I can see them at a glance. Not so on the iphone/ipad.

I'd have liked tabs not only for direct switching, but as a visual aid too. could have been an option?

And I agree about the lack of 'open in new tab' feature. or at least having 'open in new window but don't bring focus to that window'

Wow what a pointless argument tabs vs card based. The original point is the fact that some pages ie. a lot of webpages have to reload when you change from tab/card to card/tab. RAM would of solved it and no amount of APIs are going to help that. You have to hold all of it in memory.

Has anyone found a workaround for Safari's lack of an "Open in Background" option? I assume Apple left that feature off since the iPad is a little light on RAM (presumably for cost and power consumption considerations), and can't preload too many pages simultaneously.

But a way to queue up links would be useful. As is, if I want to finish browsing a page before going to a number of other linked pages, I need to:

1 Tap-and-hold a link
2 Choose "Open in New Page"
3 Wait a second for the new page to start loading
4 Tap the window manager
5 Tap the original page
6 If the original page has a lot of content, wait for it to reload
7 Repeat steps 1-6 for each link

Step 6 is the most inconvenient: large pages with lots of images take a while to load and almost always need to reload even if only one other window has been opened.

I'm surprised there isn't an "Add to Queue" option in Safari's tap-and-hold context menu (with the "Queued" folder available through the bookmarks button).
FYI for anyone who finds this thread, Atomic browser solves this problem (though it's a bit crash prone).

Yep what they said - atomic browser is a lot closer to using a real desktop browser with tabs. You can hold down on a link and open a background tab, I have 5 pages loaded. Even better I can do a two swipe left or right to switch between the tabs.
