I'm on the latest version of Sierra and Safari, but lately noticed anytime I connect to cnet.com Safari will freeze and require a force quit. initially, it was via search results, but once i narrowed it down to cnet.com, even going to that URL alone will freeze up Safari. I've tried disabling all extensions (java, adobe, etc...) to no avail.

I'm not seeing that at all on Sierra/Safari on cnet.com. Maybe you have some malware or adware that snuck in.

Try running MalwareBytes and see if it picks up anything.

You mentioned "extensions"... have you also turned off all extensions in Safari preferences?

Yes, all extensions turned off and even removed.

Found the problem. After several minutes (5-10) it would pop up an error about the certificate issuer being invalid. If I tell it to accept, it seems to work fine afterwards.

Accepting the potentially bad cert is not a good idea either. Anyone have any suggestions how to properly work past this. Here is a screen shot of what I see if I wait long enough. Going to the same site works fine when coming from my Windows PC and Firefox
