Hi everyone,

When I'm in Chrome on my MacBook Pro (and even if Safari is completely closed) and I invoke the App Switcher on my iPhone 14 Pro Max, I get this message at the very bottom where it says "Safari from [device name]").

Is it supposed to work like that? I'm just confused because it gets displayed even when I'm in Chrome as opposed to Safari and it still says "Safari".

Yes, it's supposed to work like that. Chrome just transmit via handoff that a website is open. On all other devices on the same iCloud login, you will be shown the option to open said website with their default browser, which on your iPhone is Safari.

Good to know, thanks a lot for your reply!

Sorry for necroposting, but this is not correct. If all devices are configured to use Chrome as the default browser, opening a page in Chrome on iOS or iPadOS will produce a Chrome Handoff tile on macOS. However, opening a page in Chrome on macOS produces a Safari Handoff tile on iOS and iPadOS.

Wow, you dug out an old one! Yes, you are right as per today. But I'm pretty sure it was the way I said back in 2023, as the default browser was quite buggy back then. Of course I might be wrong, but hard to go check that out now 😉

The internet never forgets. 😉

I only came across this post because things are still not working as they should. Starting a browsing session on macOS always causes Handoff to pick it up in Safari on iOS and iPadOS, even when it's not the default browser. All other combinations seem to work as expected (i.e. iOS/iPadOS to macOS, iOS to iPadOS and iPadOS to iOS).

What happened to Apple's "it just works" motto?

I guess you have a good case to open a ticket in their feedback assistant. Something tells me they're not aware of this.
