I really dislike any adware software or programs that help.

I would use AdwareMedic, but you can do what the AdwareMedic's developer explains here : http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-identification/

Without knowing what you installed it is difficult to tell you how to manually remove it. The AdwareMedic app Bruno09 linked can be trusted and it is not something you need to run all the time or even keep on your system. Just open the AdwareMedic app and run it one time to get rid of the adware you installed, then delete the app if you like.

I would prefer to search and destroy the files myself it at all possible...
Does anyone know a way like the one earlier which suggested removing files from Library, etc?

Ok, then please screenshot the problem in your web browser so I can see what it is doing. Also, click one of the links, or hover over it with your mouse so I can see what or where it is advertising. I can usually pick out what it is from that, and give you instructions on how to clean it.

I really do recommend using AdwareMedic, though. I promise it will clean it, and as WeaselBoy said, you can always delete it later.

Hello all, I'm a new Mac user and have not had these problems yet on a Mac. I have bookmarked this for the future however and I appreciate all the help I see here.
I do have a win 8.1 tablet that has an adword problem as described here using chrome. I clean my browser on that tablet, delete the extensions and the problem goes away for a while, even a couple of days but always comes back.
Again, thanks for the tips here, I'll save for future using my mac and will attempt some of these solutions on the 8.1 tablet. the tablet is simply an experiment in keeping up with tech, so it is not critical. anyway, I can use safari on that tablet and not have the problem lol
