Running iMac with the latest Yosemite and Safari upgrades.

Today, as I was reading a news story on Safari, a small rectangular text box opened in the middle of the page with the following message:
You might not be running the latest security software on your Mac. The message advised that the user call a 877 number for assistance.

Could this be the same malware that is showing up on iOS? Or was this just a popup, attempting to sell something?

It's not malware. It's just a pop-up advertisement. Obviously, no site is able to determine if you're running "the latest security software" or any security software. To avoid misleading people, I recommend you update your thread title to say "Safari in Yosemite pop-up ad"

Or change the title to "Scareware":
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scareware#Scam_scareware
    ...
Some websites display pop-up advertisement windows or banners with text such as: "Your computer may be infected with harmful spyware programs.[6] Immediate removal may be required. To scan, click 'Yes' below." ...
