Safari keeps setting itself as default browser

I just bought a new MacBook Pro, and every time I reboot, Safari is set as the default browser. I've even gone into Safari's prefs and set Firefox as the default, but every boot, it resets. Why is this happening? It's pretty annoying.

Apart from setting Firefox as default in the Safari prefs, have you tried setting it as well in its own prefs?

As far as I can tell, there's no place in Firefox to set Firefox as the default browser.. only the option to check if it's the default or not (and prompt the user).

If I can't resolve this issue, it just might prompt me to do a reformat and reinstall of Leopard.

Why does this not happen on my Mac Pro running Leopard, though? I did do a reformat/reinstall on that machine. Maybe if I did that on my MacBook Pro, it would be ok? I wonder if all the people having this Safari default browser issue are people who bought their Mac and just started using it out of the box without a reformat/reinstall.

can't imagine that being the case, maybe just bad luck that something in safari got stuck.....

I'm sure you're right, and maybe just a reinstall of Leopard will fix it up. Might be worth it.. I'm gonna start pulling my hair out over this. 😉

Are you running with FileVault enabled? If so, then that's the problem. It's a bug that cropped up around 10.4.5 or so, and continued on with 10.5.

Evidently for some reason some of the preferences don't get saved properly.

AHH, yes, I am running FileVault. Interesting.. I'll report the bug to Apple though I'm guessing others already have.
