Safari not accepting url names

If you for example just type "apple" in the url window Safari will take you to http://www.apple.com

Recently that function has stopped working. If I type "apple" I got to a page from my service provider Verizon with a bunch of suggested web sites.

Any ideas what I need to do to resolve this?

I'm not sure if its a DNS issue, but add 4.2.2.2 to your DNS servers in the advanced section of your Network prefs.

Yeah, this is the Verizon DNS system. You could try switching to OpenDNS if you want, which should fix the issue.
