I normally use Firefox, but sometimes I find myself needing Safari. I'd really like to be able to just spotlight for it, but if I search Safari, I don't get the app, just the directories...

What's going on here? Here's a screenshot:

This is a very old thread, but I have just encountered the same problem. I couldn't find anything on google with a similar problem except this...

The only thing that has changed on my machine is that I did an update (Safari) in the last couple of days. Not sure if it is related or not.

Still looking for a fix if there are any ideas.

Same goes for me. Safari's not found by Spotlight. I too was prompted by System Update to download and install a Safari update recently.

What gives?

Safari (the actual app) shows up in my spotlight fine. Try forcing spotlight to reindex your internal hard drive by doing:

System Prefs -> Spotlight > Privacy Tab -> Add you entire 'Macintosh HD' to the list or whatever name you have for it, it will warn you that spotlight will not work in some applications if you do this just click OK and let it happen.

Then simply remove that from the list. This will force spotlight to reindex your system - which you can check by clicking on spotlight in the menu bar and it will show you the reindexing progress.

Hope it helps!

This fixes it on 10.6. Thanks!

Although this is an old thread, it works for me for the same problem on the recent upgraded 10.12.5. Thanks a lot!

I just have to say that thank you for keeping old threads because this appears to be a long standing problem from the length of the thread. Pretty stupid that Apple can't find it's own browser reliably. I like my mac and ipad alright but I can't figure out why some people think Apple are gods.
