I have an old desktop PC with windows 11 which performs properly using a web browser and internet searches for comparison.

My Intel MBA will work fine on Safari at first but if I leave Safari open and use the internet after a while then Safari slows down.
Links and searches which would only take a few seconds to appear are instead very slow to display contents.
If I close Safari and reopen it then the performance returns to normal.

Im using Sonoma 14.5 Safari 17.5

Any suggestions on what's happening ?

There are several possible options:

- Local antivirus/antimalware security is slowing your system down.
- Safari extensions to block ads/tracking are slowing your browser down
- You have old cruft or corrupted caches etc causing issues slowing things down.

The best solution is to A/B test each to see which (if any) might help.

Disable any extensions from Safari and remove them. Is Safari any faster loading wikipedia.org, kernel.org, or similar open source sites without ads/tracking?

Do you have antivirus/antimalware installed? Norton, Mcafee, and others are notorious for causing slowdowns. You might consider Malwarebytes instead.

After that, try something like Onyx or Sonoma Cache Cleaner first. These are generally good "clear the cruft" options that are low risk and free/free to try. You might also scan with Malwarebytes if you think there is any chance of malware on the system.
