maybe people are getting different results because they are using different versions of flash ...?

How do I find out if fox is using flash? I don't know anything about websites. I always made it a point to avoid learning about it.

If you right click (at least in Firefox on Windows) on a picture or animation on a web-page you get a menu with an "About Macromedia Flash Player ..." item if it's flash content.

I have this same problem! Thank you for reminding me. It was happening before 10.3.5. I meant to mention this as well in the thread. I can't find any reason for it. It says it can't find the host almost instantly, and then I have to hit return again and it loads right up!

I'm having this problem as well, but for me, I wasn't having it at all until I upgraded to 10.3.6. At least, I can't remember having the problem until recently, which is when I did the update.

Yeah you're right. It is flash. In fact when I right click on that, the cpu usage goes away. In fact I have noticed that flash games seem to eat the CPU for some reason on OSX but not on Windows. I guess it's Macromedia's fault. :)

You know what I don't like about Safari? The false error "Safari could not open (blah) because it could not load any data from this location". If I try again, it always works. BTW, that Fox News page sends my CPU usage to 100% - and it stays that way as long as that Flash graphic is onscreen.

Webpage will not load 1st time

On the Apple discussion boards there is quite a bit of info on how to stop this. I reupdated the latest Java update which stopped Safari from doing this for a couple hours. It then eturned to doing it. Many suggest putting your DNS servce address in Internet preferences. (Not sure on this exactly)

I thought it was safari too- but my whole machine does it. albeit less frequently. IE does it and so does Safari

Another thing that is really slow is secure log-in pages. When I log in to .Mac on my G5 it is very slow and the fans start revving.

I thought .Mac was just like that, but it is actually Safari. The same log in window comes up in a flash on IE6/Win2k.

Yes, I have experienced that too...
According to AppleInsider, the 10.3.7 update includes a new "lookupd," I would be willing to bet that it fixes this problem.

That's encouraging to hear, broken_keyboard. I look forward to Mac OS X 10.3.7!

The whole thing works fine for me. Weird...

same here.

working on PB G4, 1.5 GH, 512MB,comcast broadband. haven't discovered any slow website yet. that includes the fox-s(h)ite.

in general the web seems to be faster than my IE, win2k at work.

maybe your systems are screwed up?

the more I use firefox the more I love it. only time I open safari any longer is to load the 1 in 500 pages firefox won't (well properly anyway).

they both have speed advantages in different ways. safari seems to open faster and load pages a tad faster but I find the overall app related tasks faster on firefox by far. firefox also seems to scroll about twice as fast as safari which is very nice.

I say get firefox and dump safirai.

On my AMD 64 3000 XP system
As for reporting on the fox news sit it was using 25-35% cpu useage on Firefox.

IE on the other had was using 3-10% on the same site.

The only thing i dont like about firefox is that useless window that appears when you push F9 in expose to view all windows. It makes me feel like there is something running in the background that i dont know about.

opera

I posted this elsewhere.. but opera kicks serious butt.

I have never tried it before this week, but it is a much more finely tuned browser than firefox, though at a price.

its implementation of themes is superior to any other browser out there. once you get used to shortcuts being different, it is just an excellent browsing experience.

I have no vested interest in any browser whatsoever, just looking for something that handles all my needs, doesn't crash, looks good, and has the fewest bugs.

personally, I would like to see omniweb get better, as it has my favorite interface with the nifty thumbnail tabs.

however, until such a day, opera it is for me.
