I've just gone back to using Safari as Chrome has become very glitchy for me. Using chrome I'm so used to glancing at the tabs to see if there's any unread messages on the webpage for that tab (shows a number in brackets, see image below), how do I get Safari to do this please? I'm assuming it can as every now and again it does display the number of unread messages in the tab, but it's rare.

I assume it's a setting somewhere but I can't find it  I'm on Safari 17.5 with OS Ventura 13.6.7

Not sure why your’s is different. I see the count in gmail on Safari. It is just the gmail app appending the count to the page <title> tag and Safari showing the page title.

In Safari settings, under Tabs, there is a setting for “always show website titles in tabs”.
Mine was turned off and turning it didn’t seem to do anything but you can start by trying that. Maybe it needs to restart safari to take effect? Don’t know.

Obviously, I don’t believe in Inbox-Zero ;)

Wow that's a lot of messages o_O

Thanks, I tried all that, makes no difference. It's still very random but it doesn't show more often than it shows.

I've had gmail since it came out. It all adds up.

Sometimes I search for unread and delete them but who has the time. If I need something I'll search for it.

Sorry I don't have a solution. it sounds like it does work sometimes for you. Perhaps Gmail is loading slowly sometimes and not updating the title quickly enough?

I always have to clear my inbox 🙈

No worries, strangely it's been showing the unread messages consistently for the past couple of days 🤷‍♂️
