Funny no one mentioned ad blocking yet, as the lack of this feature in Safari is the main reason I'm using iCab. Sometimes when I turn off ad blocking I just shake my head in disbelief considerung how ridiculous the web looks without it.

Thanks!!

That answers my question. I can't stand that iOS safari doesn't have ad blocking. Im going to download iCab.

I also use iCab, mostly because of ad blocking. I just miss Safari's Reading mode!

An icon for Readability appeared in my iCab browser toolbar after I downloaded the Readability app. At least, I'm pretty sure it wasn't there before. I don't know. I just know that I downloaded Readability and then that same day I noticed the same icon inside of iCab. I was impressed and very pleased.

I find iCab useful to have around, as it lets you upload images, and you can set the browser to identify as the desktop Safari for sites which force a mobile view.

Until you can change the default browser, the performance of other browsers isn't restricted, and bookmarks/reading list are synced to my other devices, Safari will remain the primary browser on my iPad.

Are any of these third party browsers actually anything other than a wrapper for Safari like Dolphin HD is?

Well yes and no but some of them offer more functionality vs safari like being able to download and upload files and Adblock.
As far as speed I can't really tell much of a difference.
You should really take a look at iCab it is worth every penny.

I just downloaded and tried iCab.

Where have you been all my life!

This solves half the gripes I've had with iOS. I love it!

If I could only figure out how to transfer all my Safari bookmarks, I'd be in hog heaven...

After iOS 5 I switched from Terra to Safari on my iPad because of the addition of tabs. I still use Terra on my iPhone 4 because of the lack of Safari tabs.

Terra is pretty good. Safari is always my go to, idk just habit. But some sites, mostly flash based crash it.

I need a android tablet just to view flash based stuff. It's still a flash based world.

Why are people downvoting you? I use terra too and its great

How do "ad blocking" browsers or plug-ins work? If using one, does that mean that the actual data is not downloaded to your device? If so, it seems like these might be really important browsers for people who are paying connectivity data rates based on usage to extend their mileage.

New iPad 4G LTE users, are you listening?

I've always wondered why someone doesn't make a search engine/portal site that's all html based that would allow you to type in an URL or perform a search and then, from within a frame on that website, show you your target website with all the paid advertisement removed. That way it would be device and browser independent.

It's quite simple actually.
On your desktop or macbook go to safari "file/ export bookmarks" and save it but save it as Bookmarks only and not Safari bookmarks.
If you have not done so you need to link iCab to your dropbox account and then copy the bookmarks.html file to the iCab folder in Dropbox.
In iCab settings go to dropbox and choose import bookmarks and voila you are done.

Can safari on the iPad use extensions? Specifically ad blockers?

No it can't.

This is a newly added feature to iCab. The developer is constantly updating this app; it's one of the many reasons I love it.
