mad jew,

I just got off the phone with SBC. They asked me if I were able to launch Internet Explore with the Ethernet cable plugged in; I said yes. Then they asked me if I was able to access any web site; I said yes. I told them that I prefer to use Safari becauce it is much faster and more convenient than IE.

They told me that If I were able to access the Internet, then that meant all of my network settings were correct. At that point he gave me the toll free number to Apple, and said "thankyou for choosing AT&T, and have a nice day sir". :)

Sorry, I really don't know where to go from here. Grasping at straws, do you have a third party firewall or something? Does SBC have any sort of proxy setup that you should be using? Does it work if you reinstall the Combo Update (10.3.9) over the top again? Does it work if you go from 10.3 to 10.3.8? Sorry for not being more helpful.

mad jew,

You're not going to believe this but, it's fixed. On nothing but a hunch, I decided to shut down the computer and also the modem. I then started the computer, let it boot up all the way, then turned on the modem. I then clicked on the Safari icon. It bounced a lot longer than usual but, finally launched. I was thrilled and creeped out at the same time.:)

Are you really all the way over in Australia? ;)

I was also having the same problem. I searched this problem through various sights. I found this was also happening to other people that had SBC DSL service (Which I have here in CT) with their Gateway router. I went to the firewall setting of the effected computer and changed it to allow all applications and now everything is working!
FYI this was also making ichat show double entrys for each sent or received message. Now both problems solved.
