I am running Safari ver. 5.1.5 on my iMac running 10.6.8 and no matter what fix I try I still get the black screen when trying to view youtube videos.

I have set Safari to 32bit mode I deleted the youtube cookies I have tried everything. It will work fine for a day if that then right back to black videos playing.

Any real fixes for this yet, it's driving me crazy!!!

Sorry if you've already tried this, but try uninstalling Safari and then reinstalling it.

Also you could try reinstalling Flash and see if that helps.

You could try opening up safari and then clicking on file>reset safari or even deleting it's .plist file.

Do you get the same problem when using Chrome or Firefox?

If nothing works you could just switch to using them which in my opinion are superior browsers.

If you need help with any of that, don't hesitate to ask me.

Good luck!

For Flash-related issues:
  • Find your Flash version and make sure it's the latest version available. Never install or update Flash from a pop-up on a website. Always go to Adobe's site to get Flash or updates.
  • Install ClickToFlash (Safari), Flashblock (Firefox) or FlashBlock (Chrome) to control which Flash content plays on websites.
  • Try using the YouTube HTML5 Video Player to watch YouTube videos, when available. (May impact fullscreen viewing. See link for details.) As far as performance impact, YMMV.

I don't get the same issue in Firefox, I deleted Safari and reinstalled it along with the latest version of Flash and so far so good but time will tell.

Like I said I have done fixes in the past and they work for a day or two, so we shall see. Thanks for the tips.
