There is, you have to find the full path of the folder you want to copy, and use the cp -R command on that path.
I don't know exactly where Desktop files are kept for sure though. Try looking in /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Users/YourName/Desktop ?
I wanted to thank everyone who chimed in with their helpful suggestions. I was finally able to fix the problem and to copy my files over to my flash drive. The solution was given by AlecMyrddyn. By going into utility and then into terminal, I used the copy CP -r followed by my destination folder that contains the files that I wanted to keep and ended it with the name of my flash drive. About five minutes later I checked my flash drive on my other computer and the folder had been copied along with all the content that I'd wanted. So thank you again Alec and everyone who offered advice. Hopefully if someone else has my problem in the future, they can see this thread.
