Safe Sleep

I always assumed that safe sleep was all software based through OS X. Since I had a 12" pb i installed the Safe Sleep hack. When 10.4.4 came out I decided to do a clean install and yet my computer can still go to safe sleep. I was wondering if it was saved in the firmware or something else or if 10.4.4 added it to models that didn't have it before...

The safe sleep stuff is enabled by NVRAM and PMU settings, so it makes sense that it would still keep working if you haven't reset those.
