Very rare to see a redesign in an 's' model year, so it looks like the notch will stay until 2021 and next year will just be a spec bump?

This year is the S year

Nah, its not. Even apple clearly stated themselves that they consider this being a redesign. I don’t see them doing any wild shenanigans next year. The camera bump will stay (fitting the rumored ToF sensor), being their new trademark. They might reduce the notch a bit and push the bezels down a bit. But I wouldn’t expect more than that

Next year will be the fourth notch year. My guess is next year in 2020 the iPhone 12 is likely to be the $699/$749 iPhone while the new form factor debuts as the $999 iPhone Pro, in a very similar way they released the 8 beside the X.

It’s all but confirmed next year will see a form factor change.
We’ve been hearing flat sides like the iPad Pro and possibly the elimination (or shrinking) of the notch.

I get the current iPhone Pro is expensive and everyone wants to feel sound about their upgrade ,but mark my words next year is the real update, which it’s why it’s not worth at all going ‘all out’ this year. Especially with rising prices.

the tech ability to put Touch ID anywhere under the front display glass being ready for launch in an iPhone in 2020 is actually highly likely.
and putting Face ID elements under glass has been theoretically possible for at least a year.

i think what would prompt apple to do that would be dependent on whether or not it can make a profit generating marketing story for how much more secure an iPhone that had both Face ID and Touch ID both needed to get into the device.

but then it could permit users to choose either or both.

conversely, why this tech isnt ready for launch in this 2019 new launch cycle is disappointing.
apple really needs to get more out of its space age circular hq. or why did it make this donut ring hq of a monument?

oh, maybe hubris.

(or maybe it simply needs to protect its investment in Japan Display investment strategy)

No, I frankly dont care. My girlfriend needs a new iPhone soon, so it was a nobrainer for me to buy this years so I can give it to her next year and buy myself the 11s. I just dont see why next year is anything more than an S year...

Out of all the rumors I would only really need the ToF and Bidirectional charging, about as much as out of the current update. The 120hz screen is gonna be a nice eye candy, but since the iPad doesnt use it half of the time, I dont see how the iPhone will. People just always crave for the shiny new thing I guess

I’m not so sure we will see anything dramatic next year. I don’t see Apple abandoning Face ID, and the only way to eliminate the notch would be under the display, which I don’t think is very likely. I’m sure there will be changes, perhaps a smaller notch, though it’s hard to say what benefit having a few more millimeters of space will provide.

As far as a redesign being “confirmed”, one week ago it was also “confirmed” that the iPhone 11 pro was going to have Apple Pencil support and reverse wireless charging. And that was one week away from the Apple event. 2020 is a year away.

Everyone keeps making the assumption that this year and next year are similar to the iPhone 7/iPhone 8 and X years. However, it was also confirmed that the X released a year early because Apple was facing pressure for something new. That would be why we did not get a plus model until the following “S” year. I don’t think that will be the standard going forward.

A complete overhaul next year would also tamper with Apple’s longtime naming scheme. I think it is more likely we see an 11s next year, rather than an IPhone 12 pro.

It’s my feeling that a significant change will come in 2021.

I’m sorry but all of you guys claiming next year won’t see a massive redesign are wrong. EVERYTHING points towards this. This year is just like the iPhone 7 year.

Also, yes I’m aware people were claiming reverse wireless charging support this year, but that doesn’t mean the rumour mill were wrong. There is evidence in code suggesting this capability. Apple pulled the feature last minute. I’m actually wondering if the hardware will still be in place for the first shipped devices.

As for naming. This changes year after years although I suspect next year will bring us Phone and Phone Pro

Dont you think you’re actually the one who wants to feel sound about skipping this year and project that feeling on the others? Because it certainly seems like that.

Whatever comes next year lies in the stars. Might as well be Apple glasses, making the iPhone a matter of lesser interest ..

No. Because I can just order the pro if I need! I’ve needed a decent upgrade for a while due to my aging X but with what the rumour mill has claimed about the 2020 iPhone it’s clear something went wrong / delayed for Apple. Also 5G is the future and the fact that this year’s phone lack that is appalling.

Makes no sense spending big (I no longer upgrade each year) this year at all.

I would love to revisit this thread this time next year

I don’t think the notch is going anywhere anytime soon because no one has been able to put a camera or other sensors under the display yet. The only way it's been done so far is cut out part of this display AKA a notch or hole. Correct me if I’m wrong on this one.

Edit: I don’t mean fingerprint sensors but rather optical sensors

While you could be right about the naming scheme, I don’t see Apple deviating from a number identifier for the phones. It makes things rather confusing for consumers, repairs etc. I feel like if they were going to just stick with Phone and Phone Pro, they would have set that standard this year with the change to a “Pro” designation. Assuming they stick to a number identifier, any significant change would indicate jumping to iPhone 12 next year.

Yeah, because everyone knows that a change of the external design is „the real update“ ...
