Safe to sleep mac with external SSD system?

Hi,

My 2013 27" iMac is running off an external SSD.

I'm used to putting it to sleep all the time. My concern is that maybe it's not as safe putting it to sleep with the external SSD, maybe the USB3 connection is not as stable.

Should I be worried about it? Should I turn it off instead of sleep?

Did that for a year on a FW 800 SSD. Worked fine... once I added an AC adapter. It'd do funny things running off only bus power though.

OTOH, my USB-C SSD runs just fine off bus power, including for sleep.
