I have a 2G iphone with 1.1.4 (unbroken using ziphone).
    (and I have a Macbook with 10.5.4)

    1. question: is it safe to upgrade directly to 2.1 using PwnageTool 2.1?

    2. question: do I need to upgrade iTunes to 8.0 before that?

    Thanks a lot in advance.

Same for me. Thought i bump the thread.

I have 2G 8Gb at 1.1.4 unlocked with iLiberty+ and would like to upgrade to 2.1. (Ive already upgraded to iTunes 8).

As thread starter is it ok to follow through with PwnageTool 2.1?
Or can someone point to a link that gives clear answer?

    Many Thanks

I think its best to upgrade to restore to a vanilla 1.1.4 then upgrade to a vanilla 2.1 and then use pwnage tool as per normal, that way there's a lesser chance of things going wrong

Yes it is safe, I did it today straight from 1.1.4 to 2.1 with PwnageTool.
You can update with iTunes 8 and 7.7
Also make sure you sync your iphone before updating that way all the sms's, notes, contacts etc will be restored as they were in 1.1.4, really handy. I'll be honest I didn't sync before updating but my last synch from last week was restored, nice.

Good luck, and there isn't anything to worry about. All errors can be fixed no problem! There are plenty of posts on here explaining everything. ;)

So far so... just waiting for all songs etc to sync back on.

Was concerned about a little circle where the 3g or wifi icon normally is but its just changed to wifi - guessing it was talking to router after being flashed etc.

Ill post again in a few minutes <fingers crossed>

OK - seems ok.... and thank you...

However, i installed one free app and now im trying others and getting an "unknown error".... when i try to buy free apps. I havent used the app store before and/so this could just be a store glitch...

anyone confirm that isnt a 2.1 pnwagetool glitch?

anyway... thanks so far myemaildw / all

If anything like that happens, just reset your phone or wait a little. Things like that usually go away soonish.

    My iPhone 2G 1.1.4 to 2.1 Upgrade

    Hi,

I am a Windows iTunes 8/iPhone 2G user. I was able to easily upgrade my "ZiPhoned" unlocked iPhone 2G from 1.1.4 to 2.1 by first using PwnageTool on a Mac to build the custom 2.1 firmware, and then I restored it on my Windows PC that was already running iTunes 8 and is synced to my iPhone. I went straight to 2.1 from 1.1.4 and I restored the custom 2.1 firmware using iTunes 8 on Windows. I don't see why the whole thing won't work on the Mac though.

I used PwnageTool on the Mac to configure and build the IPSW file. Once the Mac PwnageTool prompted me to connect the iPhone, I copied the custom firmware file from the Mac to the PC, connected the iPhone to the PC and performed one last iTunes 8 backup and sync. I then closed iTunes, turned off the iPhone, and put the iPhone in DFU mode. I did the Shift-Click+Restore (Alt/Option-Click+Restore for Mac) to restore the custom firmware when iTunes launched automatically when the iPhone entered DFU mode. The 2.1 firmware was successfully restored, the iPhone rebooted and the Bootneuter SIM unlock program started to run on the iPhone. iTunes detected the iPhone and asked me if I wanted to restore from my backup. Once the Bootneuter process completed and the iPhone restarted (wait for the Bootneuter process to finish/restart the iPhone), I said yes to the restore then my data was restored, the iPhone synced with my library and the process was completed. No hassles, no issues or problems whatsoever!! No data was lost, the phone was unlocked and upgraded from 1.1.4 to 2.1. Easy as pie.

I recently bought my first Mac, but everything is still on my Windows PC. After this, I am very eager to finally migrate everything to my Mac.

    Cheers,

    ITGuy

I dont know? - its great to have an up to date iphone and not a brick!

I only updated because it was billed as the 'major' update, otherwise i wouldnt have bothered - hence my uncertainty around using pwnagetool.

I looked through the apps store and there doesnt seem to be anything that im particularly interested in. This could change in time but right now the phone pre-apps was enough to satisfy me. :)

So, here is my response to my own question: it seems to be doable - I went from 1.1.4 (unlocked via ziphone) straight to 2.1 (via pwnagetool).

    However:
    1. it took me several hours;
    2. the whole process was pretty "flaky".

See my more detailed report here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=6236320&postcount=120

    Hi guys!

Sorry for repeating, I just need to be sure.

    I'm running 1.1.4 on 2G previously freed by iLiberty+.

    I've downloaded everything I need - iTunes 8, PwnageTool, QuickPwn, 2.1 firmware and 3.9 & 4.6BL.

What is the EXACT and the BEST procedure? First PwnageTool to build a custom FW and then update with iTunes and then pwn? Or first update with iTunes 8 to 2.1 and then use Pwnage?

I don't care much about backups, I can easily put everything back on in few minutes. So if clean restore helps, I can do it!

    Thanks very much!

My experience - which mirrors your position from what you have written.

1, I had already upgraded to iTunes 8
    2, Followed iClarified @ http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1557
3, Download all files as listed on tutorial, 4.6, 3.9, PwnageTool 2.1 AND the restore.ipsw - USING FIREFOX (it downloads as folder using Safari which doesnt work)
3a, Follow the tutorial ie. putting all files into folder on desktop etc...
4, A couple of bits of tutorial didnt come up for me but it wasnt confusing. I just scrolled on to next bit.
5, Overall everything worked smoothly. No error messages or anything.
6, Sync your phone so everything gets backed-up & so it'll load itself back on at the end.
    7, Then follow tutorial.
8, At download packages i picked OpenSSH - as in the tutorial but have little idea what it is
9, Took me around 30mins max. And I was reading everything twice to ensure no mistakes.

I was unsure but in the end as long as you follow the tutorial, which looks more complicated than it is, everything should be fine - assuming all things being equal.

Good luck - should be ok. :D

    Thanks, Yuanmoons

However, neither your reply nor iClarified tutorial does tell me if I should first upgrade 1.1.4 to 2.1 in iTunes 8 in a regular way and then use Pwnage or first build the custom firmware in Pwnage and then update in iTunes...

Could you tell me which way did you choose?

    Thanks

I'm not sure what you mean. Maybe you have misunderstood, as far as i am aware the 1.1.4 & 2.1 are referring to firmware on your iphone - nothing else. It has nothing to do with iTunes. iTunes only displays the firmware on your iphone.

Therefore all you need to do is update to iTunes version 8 first - which you already have done. Then plug in your iphone and sync. Then leave the iphone plugged in (i quit itunes) and then follow the iClarified tutorial which will do all the work on your iphone. This is when the PwnageTool 2.1 builds a new custom firmware which is restored on your iphone at the end of the process.

So there is no updating firmware on itunes from 1.1.4 to 2.1 because its not possible.

It was as simple as that for me.

Hope that makes sense. Im pretty confident but as im not an expert maybe someone will confirm what im saying.

Well, maybe I was just being unclear...

I thought that when iTunes tells me:

"A newer version of the iPhone software is available (version 2.1). To update your iPhone with the latest software, click Update.",

that it will actually update my iPhone... :)

Anyway, now I understand that I don't need iTunes to get 2.1 on my phone, Pwnage will do it instead, right?

OK, it's getting late here, I think I'm gonna give it a try in the morning and let you know how did it go.

    Thanks guys!

Whilst i was gathering info from these threads i read that if you are on 1.1.4 on your phone and its been unlocked via liberty, pwnage etc - and you update VIA itunes to 2.1 (ie. apple) it will brick, or mess up atleast, your phone.

You need PwnageTool 2.1 to build & then restore custom firmware onto your iphone, so ignore itunes update option.

Well, good thing that I did not update via iTunes then...

I'm really glad that I asked you first, this way I have a chance to use my phone after all... ;)

PwnageTool it is then, looking forward, although a bit scared!

Thank you again, you have probably just saved my iPhone!

I was worried. I got my iphone for £170 when they discounted to run down stocks, so to buy a new one for £350/400 now was not something i wanted to have to consider.

I dont think you can 'brick' the phone now, only create complicated process to revive it.... i think...

Anyway, it was surprisingly simple following the iClarified (for me). Good luck. ;)
