Safe to use Serial Number decoders?

I just got my iPad and I was curious to find its build week, so I inputted it into the chipmunk decoder that people are using. Is it safe to be putting our serial numbers into these decoders? and what could a person do with an iPad serial number?

It is safe to use them. There really isn't much that can be done with just a serial number.
