I don't normally shop at Target because of their security problem. But when I do I ask if they have Apple Pay....last week the clerk asked me what that was. Maybe Target's Apple business has something to do with not providing the extra security by providing Apple Pay?
Probably not, no. Walmart, probably the closest analogue to Target, also doesn't accept it.

If the sales were down in Apple products, then Target would make up for it in selling more Samsung or other competitors products! It seems that people are just not shopping there.

Umm Really..... Target could your sales be down due the fact your company having a Major security breach & credit card theft.... Freaking PANSIES!!!!

The slow Apple sales at Target thing seems pretty obvious.... The demographic buying the Apple items at Target were primarily buying the iPhone. Otherwise, it was the MP3 players, iTunes gift cards, and now perhaps the Apple Watch or occasional AppleTV. The iPhone is about to get a refresh so sales are slow everywhere as people wait to see what the iPhone 7 offers. The iPods are dying out slowly, since fewer and fewer people care about a single purpose music player device, vs. just using their phone for that task. (Our local Target store just put the iPod Shuffles on a 40% off sale to get rid of them.)

List of new Apple products for the last 6.5 years:

- Watch

List of new Apple products for next 5 years:

- Car

And both of these have dubious chances of success.

While the premise of this article may be a bit silly (that Apple is reponsible for Target's sales decline) it's a sobering reminder that 'lack of Apple innovation' is not just a perception - it's a fact.

I keep my non-Mac Apple devices up to date because I love the refinements, but the only thing "new" I have is the Apple Pencil - and that's an accessory!

If Apple's sales aren't down 20%, then maybe the problem isn't Apple...

Maybe people just don't want to buy Apple things at Target when the sales staff isn't really knowledgeable about the products and many can order online or, if they really need product help when buying, can just go to an Apple Store?

Ummm....when sales drop by X amount , be it Apple Store or any other store it's not cause the problem is the retailer .... The 20% drop is based on people who shop at target even based on the concerns you raised....so in short target customers did not get smarter by 20% and realise they should shop in an Apple Store ;

if I was in the markert for a new Mac, I'd struggle to justify the high premium price for such old tech, questioning also if apple is serious about computers anymore. Many are not dumb, and of apple is going down the Mac Pro update cycles for its computers, people will look for alternatives.....

Still don't understand the appeal of OLED screens. Apple's screens continue to be reviewed as some of the very best - what is gained?

Best thing I can say here.. go look at one of the latest Samsung devices or one from the last year or so.. They are extremely bright, take less power and have a smaller bezel. Personally I would love to keep my iPhone screen at full brightness all day long but it just can't make it. Until Apple puts OLED screens into their devices, my 6s+ will have to last me.

Hopefully we're on the cusp of some really great products...if not this year then next year. Apple computers all are due for an update; especially in processor and graphics capabilities. I'm not buying Apple until they refresh their line. Would also like to see an Appke Watch update along with the new iPhone. Also seems like they could step up their game in the home automation front as well.

We'll keep our fingers crossed!

Let me think.
Target, a store that is supposedly sell more things than just Apple stuff, is blaming Apple for poor performance.
If I was a shareholder, I would vote this guy out. Clearly he is not capable in maintaining a business, and relying on a single company's (Apple) products for sales performance.

I don't think it is fair to simply say this guy doesn't know what he is doing and he should be voted out for this. Of their 1.1% same-store sales decline, 21% of it can be tracked specifically to Apple products (0.7% electronics decline, Apple is 33% of that). In a business of that size and SKU count if you can isolate a near quarter point of impact to a single product or small pool of products it is worth highlighting in a quarterly call.

What isn't fair is to insinuate that it is Apple's fault or Apple isn't doing enough to promote its products through this sales channel unless you can back it up with specifics. I don't believe Apple's YoY declines have been at the Target-specific Apple YoY decline pace. That indicates there is something else at play.

Uh, what? You/he could argue that Apple sales are down, and I'm sure that could have affected Target a tiny bit. But is he really trying to say that iPhones and iPads are such a huge part of Target's business that Apple is why Target's Q2 earnings are disappointing? I find that hard to believe.

He said electronics contributed to an overall sales drop of .7%, with 1/3 due to Apple. Overall Target sales are down 1.1%, so it's ~.25% due to Apple, ~.45% due to other electronics and .4% due to everyone else.

But I'm a bit surprised to hear an obvious Apple fan criticizing Target for Apple being a big sales item at Target. I'll bet you have nothing but positive things to say about Apple's many, many billions of dollars in revenue. How do you think this happens without Apple being a huge sales contributor at major retailers?

He blames Apple for his companies losses. If your relying on one brand for your stores success you are in trouble.

Also it may be people are just not buying Apple products from them. Don't just say people are not buying Apple products to cover your poor selling performance.

Also there is always a dip this time of year as new models are due next month.

No always an option. I live in the highest average income county in the US and there are no Apple stores here, just big box retailers.

No one wants stale bread at caviar prices.
Very Well Said.

The slap of reality for a narcissist company like Apple. Used to dictating, controlling and enjoying fat profits, the Cupertino Company has lost its mojo.

The innovations coming from Samsung are making Apple look bad. Cutting into the image of a formerly untouchable tech company. Apple's no longer magic.

The level of speculation in this phrase...

latest
My eyes rolled so hard when I read that they nearly did a 360. Most investors are not going to buy stock in a company just because of a sketchy rumor that may or may not pan out a whole year later, especially when that company's sales are down.

It's called a correction, Mac Rumors. When a stock is oversold and is at a price lower than what it is worth, investors will see it as a bargain and buy in. Also, the stock is up this past month because Apple had a better quarter than expected (and I know you knew that MR ).

Target killed the 10% off days for Target card holders. I used to buy Apple stuff there. Not anymore. Hardly even go to Target for anything.

And can't use Apple Pay to buy them... :)

Phones and computers are good enough now that a 2-3 year upgrade cycle isn't necessary anymore. It also doesn't help that Intel's been taking longer and longer to release new processors now that they're basically the only game in town (when was the last time AMD released something that Apple could use in a MacBook?)

A lot of people need to adjust their expectations, I think.

In the modern era of doom and gloom for Apple narrative that some hold sacred, this is the first time I have meaningfully heard a third party call out Apple for their issues. This one has to sting. I think Apple will be fine in the long run, but they have become a bit stale of late. That's not completely surprising. The computer and phone industry is mature overall, and differentiation is harder than ever. To be "high end" when the gap with with "low end" is freakishly small is not an easy proposition. That higher margin is a tougher sell. I think the next iPhone will be fantastic, but from leaks so far it doesn't look to have enough newness to separate it from the pack. And new macs are sure to be thinner and more cool than ever, but when many fewer dollars access the same performance, many of us will reluctantly but realistically choose price. Apple watch doesn't hit media, but v2 has solid potential. I'm not on the Apple is doomed bandwagon, but this is the first time, other than knee jerk reactions to micro-feature changes, where I start to think their position is less stable than I expected.
