Sales tax would not be that bad if they were already included in the sticker/advertised price. It would make things seem more expensive, but tha'd be the price you'd pay. Nothing more, nothing less.

And ... umm ... how would you propose they advertise the correct price for you, in particular, since each state charges a different rate...

Your idea is OK for the corner store, but not for any Internet, TV or print advertising that is produced on a national or regional basis.

you can always do the not so right thing and buy in a state that doesn't have sales tax, or during your week or day of no sales tax. i believe in MA it is only a day of not having to pay sales tax.

oooh that brings me to a question, if you purchase something online during your day of "no sales tax" do you have to pay sales tax on it? since apple has to charge sales tax because of state law, wouldn't it be different on that one special day?

Never heard of that before, you mean your state declares a sales tax holiday for one day? That's seriously warped... it must cause untold grief to companies and accountants. I can't see how in the world Apple or anyone else could accommodate that on any non-face-to-face transaction.
Exceptions to rules are always the most difficult things to program for.

Geez, I can imagine it now -- every appliance and furniture and jewellery and computer store in the state holding back on invoicing for two weeks, then putting through 3 gazillion invoices on one day.

Yes MA has a special no sales tax day, in other states it lasts a whole week from what i have been told. Normally i go to borders and buy about 20 books.

I was just wondering how internet purchases would work. I doubt they wouldn't charge sales tax because of all the trouble invovled in it

In Ohio when you file for State Income Tax at the begining of the year you are supposed to report what you spent on the internet (or a catelog...if those even exist anymore) and apply sales tax to it.

The only things you are not responsible for are things you buy in other states while there. Thus, if I buy something on eBay in Michigan, I don't have to report it. :D At least I hope that is the deal.

Hmmm...

You may wish to reconsider that position as you drive down a state highway on your way to a state funded school or hospital, or use any of the other services that your state and local taxes pay for.

Then say a prayer of thanks you don't live in Canada (14%-15% tax in most provinces) United Kingdom (17.5%) Netherlands (19%), France (19.6%), Austria & Bulgaria (20%) Belgium (21%) Denmark, Norway, Sweden or Hungary (25%)

And if you don't have health insurance you will be paying for quite a lot of that hospital bill.

I'm in Jersey and pay zero sales tax, I'd pay £559 ($1,013) for an iBook from Apple with all necessary taxes paid.

You make a very good point. I never thought of that before. Thank you for the enlightenment (NOT being sarcastic)...
