You guys think Apple will keep the iPads at 4:3 or change it up?

There was something about the icon indicating a 5:4 AR but I kind of doubt it. I’d say there’s a 70% chance they stick with 4:3.

Well, the 9.7” is still 4:3, seems like the 12.9” is staying the same so still 4:3, and given that the 10.5” was a new size and resolution just introduced last year, I feel like they’re likely going to stick with it instead of changing it again.

Would be nice to have something slightly more stretched...

If the leaked dimension are to be believed, there is a change in aspect ratio for the 10.5" ipad replacement.

    https://cdn.macrumors.com/article-new/2018/10/slashleaksipadpro2018dimensions-800x548.jpg?retina

i.e minus 12mm for the bezels (6mm on each side):

    smaller ipad: 235.64/166.52=1.42
    larger ipad: 268.66/203=1.32

    We'll see soon enough anyway.

BTW, again if those dimension are to be believed, using basic arithmetic

the smaller ipad will be 11.35" screen diagonal
    larger ipad: 13.3"

I can see it going either way actually. With the 10.5" rumored to go to 11" I can see them making the screen slightly taller (in portrait mode) to keep the overall dimensions roughly the same (for use with the smart keyboard). I wouldn't complain if they made the switch to 3:2 (which falls somewhere between 4:3 and 16:9). At least we won't have to wait long to find out!

A 3:2 aspect ratio would be quite interesting to see on the smaller Pro – that would mean 3:4 AR in split view. I do wonder if that's enough to nudge it to use tablet UI instead of phone UI in split view.

It's not going to 11, people, that rumour got debunked. And they are not going to use a non-standard aspect ratio on one model only when every iPad ever made has an aspect ratio of 4:3.

They did exactly that with the iPhone X last year: changed the aspect ratio on one model while keeping the other two at 16:9

iPhone aspect ratios have changed several times (part functional, part trend), the iPad aspect ratio has never changed. In phones there was an emerging trend towards tall and narrow; there's no reason to do that to the iPad, particularly on one size only.

Until last year, the iPhone aspect ratio at the time only changed once, with the iPhone 5. Now we are at two times. When the iPad was born it was shaped as a book reader / consumption device (to be mainly used in portrait orientation). Now it is sold as a laptop replacement, with a keyboard cover, which suggests that the main position is landscape. I'm not saying it WILL change, but I'm not convinced with the "there is no reason to do it" thing. Just my opinion.

The resolution of the new 11” is listed as 2388 x 1668. Anyone figured out the math on the aspect ratio yet? It falls somewhere between 4:3 and 3:2 I think.

@thunng8 already did the calculations above. ~1.42

That's 1194 x 1668 in split view. Anyone familiar with how Apple determines which UI to use based on resolution?

I'm a bit surprised that they introduced a new resolution with the 11" (just after then 10.5" brought one last year), and not only that but it also has a different aspect ratio. Weird.

I'd love to play with one in-store. One of the things I didn't like about the 10.5 was you still get phone UI in split view. If this gives tablet UI mode in split view, that might actually tip the scales for me.

    Yep. I stand corrected

Not sure I get the rationale though. And so we have another round of waiting for apps to be updated.

Dying to order one right now but I really better wait to see in store first, lol.

Hands on gives the impression of the 11" feeling a bit narrow (new AR) and definitely smaller than the 12.9. My guess is that its similar to the 10.5 in terms of UI classes for split mode.

Agreed. Feels odd to me, especially the different aspect ratio. I love the 4:3, hope they don't slowly move away from it.

Yeah, it seems like a pretty oddball ratio. It's certainly not anything standard....

For what it's worth, here's an idea of the increased size:

Hmm, looks like split view layout is still same as 10.5.

I’m actually surprised both iPads have different aspect ratios to one another.
