Please correct me if i'm wrong, but from the iPhone X to the Xs, to the 11 to the current 12 the we are still in Face ID first gen? Even Touch ID was updated speed up 3 times to its current version in the Air. I just find it strange that we see no improvements, faster unlock etc.

I thought there were improvements already with faster recognition, wider angle, and improved front facing camera. I believe those were mentioned during the 11/11 Pro keynote if I wasn't mistaken. And it seems for faceID, part of the improvements is also tied to the Ax chip being used, so it gets improved naturally (I'm guessing the speed in ML or ISP).

We saw improved Face ID speed with XS. With iPhone 11, the device unlocked at more angles.

The hardware has already shrunk from the Kinect to now. All it does is shoot a IR Dot matrix, it’s the CPU that calculates the rest. It does feel faster on my 12 Pro.

How much faster do you need it and what other improvements do you need ?
It would be nice to have it work in any orientation like the iPad Pro. But on the phone it isn’t absolutely necessary like it is on the iPad Pro.

I suppose the only improvement I would like to see would be for faceID to penetrate a mask .. Ha Ha :)

A little bit faster and in this covid world better recognition with a mask if it is even possible. It seems the improvements are tied to the new chip, not any upgrades to the Face ID hardware which i find interesting. At this stage we are 4 generations in and no Face ID 2 or even a smaller Face ID notch. full disclosure, I have an iPhone Xs Max. Personally i would be happy to have the Face ID size reduced or moved into the bezel.

Not sure why you would say that. iPhone 11 has a more powerful VCSEL. That's how it's able to do better angles/distance and against bright lights.

Coming from the X, FaceID on the 12 Pro is a LOT faster. Although most of it likely comes from the much improved Neural Engine.

Didn't really notice any angle improvements though. (Not that i was specifically testing... i just had a couple of times when i thought "oh, still not unlocking at this angle")

No only possible, it’s already happened. I was at Aldi a couple weeks ago, put my phone near the scanner to check out, and was getting ready to enter my pin code when the Face ID did its thing. I thought that was a fluke, so when I got out into the parking lot, I tried it again. I was able to unlock my phone five times in succession without entering a code or removing my mask.

At this stage we are 4 generations in and no Face ID 2 or even a smaller Face ID notch.

The notch is cosmetic. Like square edges. Some people like it, some people don’t. Numbers are marketing. Would calling it “Face ID 2” make it perform any better?

It’s been 4 generations, it would be nice if could catch up with TouchID by supporting more than 2 faces (TouchID supported 5) and supported both portrait and landscape unlock.

I agree with those who want it to work in landscape orientation. That feature has worked well on the iPad Pros for two years now.

For that matter, on a phone with a 6-inch plus screen I’d like to be able to do everything in landscape, like on an iPad.
