Hi,

I am new to Macs, and have a (probably) simple question:

How do I set a default size for all folders I open in the finder? I know I can set the "View Options", and control the view, the spacing etc., but how do I set that I want all folders opened to be of a certain size, and have the dividing line set at a certain place?

I have a HD with a really long name, and have as well a few shares, and I always find that I have to scroll up/down left/right.

I know these setting are decided for each folder, but I want to set a default globally. Is there a setting, or a freeware that does that?

Go to the Finder. Close any open Finder Window. Click onto the Finder icon in the Dock. This will open a new Finder Window. Resize that Window, resize the divider, and position the Window anywhere you want, but don't navigate through your Files and Folders. Then close that Finder Window. And after that, every new Finder Window will have the exact same size, divider and position on your screen.

Well, almost every. DMGs that mount and then launch a finder window will still conform to their own rules.

This will only make every window opened from the Finder button the same size as when you left it. Say you had an external HDD on your desktop. If you adjusted the window you opened from the Finder button, when you go and click the external HDD on the Desktop to open a window, that window will still be the size you DON'T want (the size you had adjusted FROM using the Finder button.)

I wish I knew a way to permanently set a size for ALL Finder windows as well. It's kind of annoying having to resize the window whenever I open a new window from a different source.

But you can set the size of each source, just like you set the New Window in the Finder. It will not be the same size of a regular New Window, but at least you can set it the way you like that source window to be.

And what TH-Gunner mentions is exactly my problem. I have a bunch of Shares mounted on the desktop, I use a lot of external HDs, and USB sticks, and they all have different sizes etc. And, even when I adjust them to look alike, there are a few changes that doesn't stick, i.e. the line that divides the names on the left and the folder contents.

There's got to be a small utility which performs this function?

That is one great little utility. It almost does all I want out of it, and I can live with the shortcomings:)
