Why do u say that. Pretty sure the iPad 2 is doing ok

I really truly don't understand everyone's obsession with such high resolution displays... I have never once looked at my iPad screen and wished it were a higher resolution.... It's perfect. Sure more is always better, but i'd rather have other stuff first

Because Apple likes to be the first to do something. They like to be at to fore front of innovation.

is it worth it on the 15inch macbook pros to pay the extra 150 dollars to jump from a glossy 1440 x 900 reoslution to the anti glare 1680 by 1080 resolution?
We can't answer your question.

What's a hundred and fifty dollars? For some, it is chump change. For others, it is several months of savings.

That said, you might be better off buying something you really want, rather than compromising on an important feature.

In the end, it's up to you.

Samsung may have figured out on how to create retina display, but not how to compensate the final design. Samsung is a huge company with many departments. The mobile division is being sued, not the components. Apple may have already bought them.

Incorrect. Samsung is a conglomerate but both mobile and LCD units belong to the same company - Samsung Electronics. Here is what Wikipedia says about this company: "Samsung Electronics focuses on four areas: Digital Media, Semiconductor, Telecommunication Network, and LCD Digital Appliance."

One can not sue a "division". Quote from Engadget/WSJ: "The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple has sued Samsung Electronics for copying "the look and feel" of its iPad tablet and iPhone smartphone. "

Apple might be screwed. Samsung has been holding SAMOLED panels for themselves for two years now. It is likely that they will do that with these new panels too.

Correction in article
Dpi stands for dots per inch. This is a printing term. Dots on paper

Ppi is pixels per inch which reflects digital input

There's no need for that density, because you don't hold a tablet as close as a smaller screen phone.

Resolution of 2048x1536 isn't double-resolution. It's quadruple-resolution.
[...]
What's with MacRumors reporting this incorrectly every time it comes up?

It's twice as many pixels in two dimensions for four times as many pixels total. Everyone understands this. What's with people griping about this every time resolution is discussed?

I hope that was sarcasm. They're usually late for the party on on almost everything.

WRONG. Apple popularized these technologies, and more:

GUI
Mouse
USB
Firewire
CD / DVD standard computer equipment (dropped floppy)
Instant wake from sleep computers / laptops
Flat screen (dropped CRT)
Touch screen
Multi-touch
Usable mobile software store
and many many more.

Most likely they will use this for themselves and probably other manufacturers of (Android) tablets.

Why? Look at the resolution - it's not double the current iPad's resolution - it's actually slightly higher than double. I have a feeling Apple wants to stick to doubling the resolution, to make it a easy transition, like the iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4.

Wow.. With very little Google researching you'd have saved yourself this embarrassment.

If the resolution is higher than what Apple needs, all Apple has to do is say, "Hey, mind reformatting it a little bit to our specs? I mean, after all, we need a slightly LOWER resolution after all hahahahahahahaaaaa"

Than Sammy will say,

"Sure buddy! Gee Golly I'm glad you're paying us millions of dollars or we'd have to hold this tech from ya ;) but that would just hurt our wallets, so here ya go!!"

That's even how they talk, I swear.

But there is. Remember Apple had to quadruple iPhone screen resolution because of the fixed nature of iOS GUI/API. They might have to do it for iPad too. Unless they manage to do what Google is doing with Android - merging phone and tablet oses and going with resolution agnostic/adjustable GUI.

Apple already got a few LCD factories ready to go soon in Japan etc

Do you know how many LCD factories Apple has? Zero. As I understand they are not manufacturing anything these days.

The ipad 3 is getting Retina for sure, no doubt.

The next gen MacBook Pros are getting extremely high red displays. Along with it's thinness and SSD-only, it'll be the big selling point.

Resolution of 2048x1536 isn't double-resolution. It's quadruple-resolution.

1024x768 = 786,432 pixels
2048x1536 = 3,145,728 pixels

3,145,728 / 786,432 = 4

What's with MacRumors reporting this incorrectly every time it comes up?

Because resolution is a measurement of linear data such as ppi or dpi.

MR is 100% correct and you are 100% wrong. Pixel density is a squared function. Resolution is a linear function.

I think yodax hit the nail on the head. Samsung isn't stupid...if they're moving 50,000 (tablets) units a year...and Apple is blowing through 50,000,000 every 12 month...they'll make the smart decision on where to implement their technology and who to sell it to.

Of course, this is only if Apple is interested. Who knows?? I'm sure Jobs and crew have their ear to the ground...and are smart enough not to burn future bridges with frivolous lawuits. As long as Apple has the coin...samsung will continue to sell to them:)

So, you think that if Samsung starts selling tablets with 4x the resolution of iPad (and do not forget that their tablets also have better specs in all other respects) people will still be buying iPads and not Tabs? I am not so sure.

Like it. USB 3, blu ray, decent GPUs. At least that last has finally seen some gains happening!

On topic, that's pretty cool, means there will be a reason for people to up to the 3, convenient as it's hard to imagine what else there would be at this point! But then again, that's just the fun part isn't it, waiting to see what they come up with.

Interesting. Could there be something to those early claims of an iPad 3 in September, after all?

I mean, I doubt it, but if Samsung says this awesome new display technology is ready to come to market, then that means Apple has already had one for 6 - 12 months in the lab.

I doubt it too but my friend in Apple R&D was talking about them trying to release it in September alongside thenext iPhone. I can't imagine this unless they have something else up their sleeves to go with the two.

I used to think the iPad's display resolution was just slightly below what it could've been (but I was pretty happy with it)...until the iPhone 4 came out with retina display. Once I saw clear, sharp text, I started noticing that the iPad's native resolution for text was slightly blurry and pixelated, unless you really zoomed in on it.

Consider me paid in advance whenever a retina display iPad comes out...

Yea, but if you like looking at your ipad from more angles than just straight on, your going to probably be annoyed at the color distortion since this isnt an IPS (in plane switching) display..... sad but true.... I would hope that if the new displays allegedly from sharp that have this same res but are also IPS come out around the same time....

I wonder how the Apple vs Samsung lawsuit will affect this. Samsung could just hold this technology for their own tablets out of spite.

That is exactly what I was wondering. Apple has sued them, so I wouldn't think that they are too happy with Steve and the rest of the gang at one infinite loop! They might just use this themselves and also let apples competition have it  If they do withhold this because of the lawsuit, I really couldn't blame them.
