Bummer, I didn't want to hear that. I won't receive my replacement until next Monday and I'm fearful of the results. Funny I've read several reviews of late by folks that tested these drives and they rave about them. So what is the deal then with all the problems.

Was your system hanging on you as well. That was what I really noticed with mine was that I had the spinning beach ball all the time. Drove me nuts. I would repeatedly have to sit and wait for the damn thing to quit spinning so I could finish what I was doing.

Mine had random freezing a few times a day. Lasted up to a minute at a time. Everything froze but the cursor.

My shipment was delayed, so I won't have mine 'til next week. :(

System hangs were probably due to a very extremely slow random write speed. This is exactly why I want an Intel X-25M 80 or 160. It would suck that you would need to "secure erase" the drive every 1 1/2 years or so.

Whilst this could be true, i doubt it, i have a macbook air with the old (by todays standards!) 64 gig PATA/ZIF SSD which is significantly slower in every respect to the Samsung 256Gb drive and i get no slow downs/system hangs at all on that machine.

A defective drive is more likely i feel.

Edit: Sorry.. Havent done my 256 Gb Sammy upgrade yet, someone's nicked me T-6! so i need to get another today.

Actually alot of my system hangs were encountered when web surfing, checking email etc. So I would associate most of that with read versus write. I would also get them when working in various office and finance applications. I mean I got them all the time basically. It didn't seem to matter if the drive was performing a read or write sequence.

Ok, Samsung 256 is in, running for 2 hours now, no CRC errors, no hangs/freezes.

Did you run "SMART Utility" on your drive?

How many "power on" hours did it have when you received it?

Yup, it started at 0, its now on 5.

I wonder if there is some way we can tell the difference between the Samsung SSDs that are defective verses the ones that run finw without errors.

I got one from eBay (it was a laptop pull), and then I got a brand new one from Dell. Both were bad.

I'm waiting for my replacement from Dell, but I have low expectations. It would be nice to narrow down the bad drives to specific manufacturing dates, firmware versions, serial number ranges, etc.

I'll check my bad drive tonight and post what I find...

Hey Malcster - keep us posted on whether or not you start getting any CRC errors.

Also, what does SMART Utility say your firmware version is? (Go to "More Info" in the top in the "Drive Information" section). It says my firmware version is: VBM15D1Q

I'm still steady at 0...
But Malcster seems to get a lot better score than mine... Probably due to 4K Random write
I also have firmware VBM15D1Q

Ok, still no CRC Errors at 6 hours now, interestingly it looks like i have a slightly newer firmware version of VBM1801Q.

It would be great if Dell/Samsung would release the firmware update... :D

Yeah... but you'd probably need to have it installed in a PC to install it (unless you're running Boot Camp or something similar.) :(

Personally, I won't install Windows on my Mac... it's like putting a 4-cylinder engine and wood-grain door panels on a Corvette.

I'd just be happy getting a Samsung SSD that doesn't hang and give me CRC errors. This issue is ridiculous. I'm desperate for a solution!!!!

What would be even better is if Samsung would offically release the SSD as a Retail SSD and not something you have to buy through Dell or ebay

Why? It doesn't look any better than the Vertex which is already on the market

The current Corsair has extraordinarily LOW power usage, which is great for laptops. It'll be nice to see a fast, 256GB SSD with low power usage. That is, assuming it is similar in that aspect to the current Corsair SSD.

Works for me...

Sadly....

For me... I won't be with the spinning HDD ever again for the OS drive.. For storage is another story though.. LOL...

Corsair P256

The retail one is coming soon as Corsair P256...

Samsung just won't market the retail by itself...

First person to post the link to buy this Corsair drive from a U.S. retailer wins a cookie!!! :D

Methinks this will be the "retail-ready" version of Samsung's 256GB SSD and will most likely have the latest firmware (all the 256GB Samsung drives we've been struggling with are OEM pre-release "Rev 0" models). It is very difficult to procure one of these brand new (and not a system pull) and if you do manage to score one and there is something wrong, getting a replacement is an uphill battle.

My second Samsung SSD was purchased from Dell, but they wanted to charge me a restocking fee for returning it. I tried to explain the drive was defective I was getting errors, but they wanted to "confirm the issue" before authorizing the exchange. Naturally, they wouldn't provide Tech Support if the drive is installed on a Mac OS X system, so I had to do some creative tap dancing to get the returns department to authorize the exchange. And still, there is no guarantee that the replacement will be error-free.

I am hoping the Corsair will be ready for prime-time consumer use (and easier to return/exchange if all doesn't go well). It would be great to just buy these from New Egg or somewhere similar.

They supposedly went on sale TODAY. Anybody know where???
