After going through the process of picking a SSD in a marketplace filled with a lot of new products clearly rushed to market, I settled on the Samsung 470 series 256GB SSD. Amongst the competition, the 470 stands out as a solid, reliable & relatively fast SATA II drive that doesn't break any speed records whilst holding up well in synthetic benchmarks that have little impact on real world usage.
At this time, there are too many end user reports here at MR and at resellers like newegg detailing data loss horror stories.. At $400 plus free shipping, the Samsung 470 hit my reliability needs with an affordable price point. The 128 can be picked up for around $209 with free shipping.
Well do you get for $400? (to be updated)
Instant sleep & resume.
Loading xcode projects displaying multiple windows/files of code is almost instant.
Compiling iPhone code & downloading to emulator sees little to no improvemt going to SSD. Damn.
Exended file writes from Xcode humm along @ sustained writes of 256MB/sec
Loading/resuming virtual machines for parallels and vmware fusion also pushes SSd read speed to max
Startup & reboot is much faster. Kinda obvious.
Hardware Setup was easy
With the Mac Pro there is a spare bay under the DVD drive ready with a combination power/Sata hookup! Woot! Like most all SSD's, the 470 is wrapped in a protective plastic shell and is designed to be tucked away in a laptop with little to no air flow. Even better!! After pulling out the DVD bay, all I had to do was plug in the SSD and close the bay. Why waste $$ on an unnecessary mount to protect the drive from shocks & bumps? The Sata bracket snaps on and should be all the protection I need.
