Will the MBP even take a 500GB drive without fussing?

I dont see why the MBP wouldn't take the drive.

Neat. Glad to hear it :)

They used the older ATA standard that was much shorter sighted. I'm not sure what the theoretical limits of SATA are: no current drive has got there, even for SATA I.

I admit I only breezes through the article but no mention of speed.

am i right in thinking 4200rpm/5300rpm?

    THanks

where do i find the limit size of SATA?

5400rpm is drive speed on the new 2.5" drive

I can't find a conclusive answer. I've found reference to 48bit LBA addressing which allows for 100's of petabytes!

So a petabyte is 1K to the 5th power.. I've been trying to figure out on how to type to the power numbers a la this..

It's really great news, in particular because this will be avail to purchase next month. However, it's SATA2 but only spins at 5400 rpm and buffer memory is 8MB.

Hitachi is very good at keeping energy consumption and noise down on their 2.5" drives. I wish they had made a TravelStar of this size/ capacity/ 7,200 rpm/ 16MB.

Perfect. Looks like I'll hold off on the 320gb, and wait for this to come down.

I was just about to post this until I saw you did :). I saw the announcement in this article from my Engadget RSS feed.

I probably won't upgrade my MBP with this, but I may just buy one to stick in an external 2.5 inch enclosure. If I get the one from OWC with a FireWire port, it would make a great portable back-up solution for a good while.

I'd say price range of $360 to $400 for that 500GB
