In bootcamp, it reboots and you can't tell if the firmware is the new one. Then one drive disappeared. Back in Mac it showed up again after restarting the power to the external drive. Anyway, the Samsung app seems iffy at best.

Not sure what you did but in my BootCamp it told me immediately that the firmware had been updated and required a reboot.

The Magician software shows the firmware revision quite clearly and will check if there are any new updates available.

The optical disc for updating the firmware on OS X was the iffy one for me.

As previously mentioned, an OS X version of the Magician software would be ideal.

If you want to check the firmware revision of the SSD in OS X, the System Profiler will display it.

I use DriveDX though. Not only does it display all the details for connected drives, it monitors SMART data and warns of impending failures.

I just put a 1TB EVO into my 2012 cMBP - how do I check the firmware version and I know viewpoints go both ways, but has anyone seen improvements with TRIM?

Will Magician method work in VMware Fusion (windows 8)?

I don't think so. I've tried with Parallels Desktop 10 on Yosemite, booting from both FireWire and USB, but the SSD is not found by Samsung Magician. This was a Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB replaced in a MBP 13" 2012.

I've also tried to make a bootable USB-stick in Parallel with Rufus, but that didn't work either.

On the other hand I did try to update the firmware with a PC running Win 8. After 1 hour I gave up and killed the process (with the power-on button). After that the SSD is mounting and not mounting randomly. I could need some help with that...:-/

How do I do this with these criterion:

No disk drive

No windows

What are my options?

Can a disk be sent back to samsung, are there any option for this?

Probably just live with it. I had to take my SSD out, put it in another tower, boot that from the bootable USB firmware update, and do it that way. PITA; even though I could boot my Mac that way I couldn't access the SSD since it was USB.

also read this:
"7) Performance Restoration supports only the NTFS file system."

That note ONLY applicable for the Windows' version Performance Restoration tool. You can use the DOS version (which need to burn a disk or make a bootable USB drive) and upgrade a HFS+ partitioned SSD.

I updated the firmware on my 500GB 840 EVO yesterday using Magician Software in Windows 7 BootCamp and it worked perfectly.

I am using the SSD in a Delock 42490 Thunderbolt enclosure.

Before that I tried using the ISO from an external optical drive but it would hang at SCANNING every time.

Of course, I completely backed up all the data on the SSD before attempting any firmware flashing.

I have just purchased an Samsung SSD 500GB EVO 840 series, I'm running Mavericks and Windows 8.1 with equal partitions on a MBP mid 2010. I'm about to replace my old Hitachi HDD with the EVO SSD.

As previously mentioned by SaSaSushi you can update the SSD's firmware through the Windows partition with the magician software, will this upgrade both partitions? or just the Bootcamp partition?

As well as Sother's question I would like to ask a couple too...

I just got a 840 EVO and cannot boot from it when it is in the optical drive bay. I have a mid 2012 MBP and plenty of people report that they CAN boot from the optical drive. My other drive, a Seagate Momentus XT hybrid also will not boot from the optical drive bay so I assumed my hardware would not support 6g drives on the optical drive connector.

Researching a firmware update brought me to this thread. My EVO firmware is; EXT0CB6Q. As far as I can tell that does not need updating. Is that correct?

Also, has anyone here managed to boot a 6g drive from the optical bay?

Correct, no update required at this moment.

I don't have a MBP, but I have a old Mac Pro 2009 model (SATA 2 only in the optical bay). I can boot from the Evo via the Optical bay. My understanding is that as long as it's a SATA port, you can boot from it. The Evo has backward compatibility, so the link speed will automatically reduce to 3G when connected to a SATA 2 port. It's max speed is reduced, but should be no difference on the boot ability.

Quite possibly it might be the caddy I'm using then... I hope so. I'm currently talking to the place I bought it from. They seem aware of the problem and are keen to solve it... Would be amazing if I could get 6gb/s on both bays.

I borrowed another caddie from a friend who's mac bit the dust and my ssd is booting very well from the Optic bay. Getting read/write speeds around 490/512.

Haven't tried the Hybrid yet but so far this is a vast improvement. Now getting 6gb/s connection from both bays. :)

File Under: Samsung: Division of Passive-Aggressive Firmware Updates

What a pain in the arse! A utility that cannot be launched from OSX or from a direct-attached drive is -not- Mac compatible.

Sure, you can put it on a webpage under the heading:
"Samsung SSD Firmware Updates for Mac Users" -but this does not make it compatible with OSX.

Does anyone need any coasters?

SaSaSushi, Can you please mention if your 840 EVO mSata connected with the Delock 42490 Thunderbolt enclosure is seen as a SCSI device in the device manager in Windows via Bootcamp?

I have my 1TB 840 EVO mSata connected via the MyDigitalSSD Bullet Proof USB 3.0 mSATA SSD Enclosure and the Magician 4.5 software does not recognize it. It shows up in the device manager as a SCSI drive.

Could you perhaps recommend any other type of enclosure (perhaps something slightly on the less expensive side than $100) that would work with the Magician software and Samsung 840 EVO drives in Bootcamp to update the firmware with the method that you have described?

Also, I actually need to do a backwards firmware flash from the new factory installed EXT42B6Q to EXT41B6Q, can you check if that could be done?

This has been previously discussed, but USB3-connected devices will not be properly recognized as SATA devices. Thunderbolt will. Also, I'm using a 2.5" 840 EVO , not mSATA. The Delock is a 2.5" Thunderbolt enclosure.

The Delock doesn't seem to be easily available in the states recently. In another thread I read that the Lacie Rugged 1TB (comes with a 2.5" hard drive, but you can remove and replace it with an SSD) can be had for $89 refurbished from Macmall. That includes a Thunderbolt cable so if it is true, it is a great deal.

You wouldn't be able to use an mSATA EVO with it though.

Also, I actually need to do a backwards firmware flash from the new factory installed EXT42B6Q to EXT41B6Q, can you check if that could be done?

This I cannot say for sure, but if I had to guess it would be no. Firmware upgraders rarely allow newer revisions to be overwritten with older.

On the topic of Thunderbolt mSata enclosures, the AKiTiO Palm RAID looks very cool. It cost $649 though and is listed as not compatible with bootcamp.
You can furnish it with a couple of 1TB mSata 840 EVOs and it will be the most sleek looking fastest maximum capacity portable drive as of today

The Delock 42509 is an mSata enclosure and it is readily available with quick shipping in California

OK, well that explains the miscommunication. I am using the Delock 42490 2.5" enclosure, not the 42509.

Yes, that should work fine in terms of Windows properly recognizing the EVO.

By the way, thanks for the link to M Factors. They seem to have the 42490 in stock as well for $98. Have you had good experiences with them? I've run out of places to refer people looking for the 42490 to in the states and would love to find another reliable seller.
