The price premium between X5 and slower T5 is roughly 2X:
  • 500GB: $400 vs. $165
  • 1TB: $700 vs. $330
  • 2TB: $1400 vs. $660
X5 is roughly as fast Apple's, who charges these prices when upgrading from 256GB base SSD:
  • 500GB: $200
  • 1TB: $600
  • 2TB: $1400
Which begs the question. Apple should replace HDD or Fusion Drive with slower consumer grade SSD.

Would this work on xbox 1 x

I’m not sure if this comes with a USB-A adapter, and even if it did, that would kill the speed. There are much cheaper alternatives for adding external SSD to X1X.

If you look on YouTube there’s a lot of speed comparisons of people using USB 3.1 SSD vs the internal drive. Turns out the improvement on the X1x is not very dramatic. It’s much more noticeable on the original Xbox one. On the X1X it’s almost not worth it, but on some games it might improve load times a bit.

Um no, you can't just toss this into a cheap case. This is a NVMe based hard drive plugged into a Thunderbolt enclosure.

You didn’t fully read the post he quoted. Yes you can and yes you can do what was stated in the quote you posted a reply on for cheaper using NVME at the same speeds using a TB3 enclosure.

New Egg lista it with a 1TB NVME SSD Samsung unit here for $599.

Finally - we've only had the MacBook Pro's to run this for 2 years...

wait a minute, are you now claiming the MacBook Pro is TOO pro?

Amazing. This forum never fails to amaze.

If you read what I wrote, I was suggesting that Apple should replace HDD and Fusion Drive with slower SSD. Apple does not sell any notebooks, let alone MacBook Pro, with HDD nor Fusion Drive.

Having said that, if it take slower SSD to bring cheaper retina MacBooks (under $1000), so be it.

I love my 2TB T5. I don’t think I’d change it for a 1TB X5...

However, I kick myself for not investing in the 2TB SSD for the 2018 MacBook Pro. I got the 1TB instead, and everything else maxed out. Having that extra 1TB internally without having to plug in my 2TB T5 would have been worth it.

Excited at this news! I have several Samsung external drives starting from the first ones (T1) and going right up to the T5..... And I, too, adore my T5s. Terrific little devices! I had suspected that something new would be announced this fall and was thinking it might be a Samsung T7, but this is even better news! Right now I don't have one of the 2018 MacBook Pros, but it is on my agenda for the not-too-distant future, and I can easily imagine one of these interesting new X5s as a companion eventually..... Although at first disconcerted by the news that the X5 is not backwards-compatible, it occurs to me that it would still be simple enough to plug in a T5 at one port of the machine and the X5 in another port and easily transfer data, and of course as time goes on one would use the the x5 as the primary external drive and then as needed copy data it had retrieved from the machine from it to the T5 for ongoing storage and backup......

I'm addicted to external SSD, no two ways about it! I can already predict that not long after I finally do get a 2018 MBP that there will also be an additional expenditure for the X5.....

Nonstop innovation at Samsung. Displays, memory, storage, CPUs, image sensors, etc... Not another company with such premium status. Credit where credit is due. Bravo.

Then why does the note and galaxy use Ufs instead of nvme?

Apple uses nvme in their iPhones doesn’t that mean it has a “premium status”. ?

The 500GB model will be priced at $400, the 1TB model will be priced at $700, and a 2TB model will be available for $1,400

The price of the 500 GB model= $400 The price to add 512GB SSD to MBP= $200
The price of the 1TB model = $700 The price to add 1TB SSD to MBP = $600
The price of the 2TB model = $1400 The price to add 2TB SSD to MBP = $1400

So I should I take my MBP that I purchased 2 days ago back and trade for 1TB MBP, paying the difference of $600 or keep it and wait to purchase Samsung drive for $700? What would you do?

I am already after only 2 days using more than 1/2 of my 256GB!

I hope the quality is better than their copy writer. “Aluminum design provides NVMe SSD giving maximum theoretical speed up to 3,940 MB/s” and I can’t wait to see the “Leather punch” that comes with it.

Yes, but you still need to back it up.

This goes without saying.

For a laptop, having an always available NAS solution for Time Machine is great. A Mac mini or other desktop with an external large USB drive and hopefully wired network can host TM backups for several laptops in a family.
