Just out of interest, what do you dislike about FaceID (honest question!). To me, it’s a seamless way of unlocking my phone - I just look at it, and it unlocks.

Just curious what downsides you see with it!
The “looking at it” part. When I had a touchID phone it would be unlocked before it got to my face.

I am to understand the faceID is a hojillion times more secure than touchID or whatever, but it irks me.

They’re using Touch ID for two reasons: space and UX. Users can either use the phone folded or unfolded. This means having they’d have to use two Face ID modules - one for the inner screen and one for the outer screen - this way Face ID works seamlessly regardless of which way the user is using the device. Using Touch ID means they can put it on the side and it can be used easily regardless of if the user is using the inner or outer screen. One Touch ID module will also use significantly less space than two Face ID ones.

I see comments like this occasionally and I am genuinely curious. What don’t you like about Face ID? It has always worked perfectly for me. Every phone since XR. Reading glasses on, no problem. Sunglasses on, no problem. Very fast and smooth.
It’s the looking part.

I want the phone to be unlocked before I turn my attention to it. I want to unlock my phone without having to wave it in front of my face mid-conversation. On the somewhat rare occasion where I need to unlock it for [reasons] but not really pay attention to it, surreptitiously reaching in my pocket/reaching toward the cradle is better instead of grabbing it and waving it in my face.

I am reading all the comments about people not interested in a foldable. But let's face it the majority of us will give in and get a foldable at some point just like the iPad and wireless ear buds and so on....

Wait it's going to have Touch ID? Whoa had not heard that rumor.

If true than that’s 4x Apple has been trying to get rid of me as a customer (*). Touch ID never works reliably for me on any Apple device. I was ecstatic when the iPhone XR had FaceID, which always works for me without issue to this day. Half my motivation for upgrading from iPad Air to an IPP is to ditch Touch ID.

* The first 1-3 times are APP v. 1, 2, and 3 that are all lacking XL eartips.

Fair point! I know everyone has different use cases, so was curious. Seems like you’ll be lucky with the foldable, then!

Foldables are wonderful - naysayers have not tried one. They may not be for you, but don't knock it for others. I tried the Fold 7 for a couple of months and it was amazing. In the end, I returned to the iPhone as I am so locked into the ecosystem and love the integrations. While I found Android about equal to ios - some better, some worse - Android only integrates well with Windows - which IMO is absolute trash.
There is also nothing as good as the Apple Watch - Samsung watches and Pixels are simply not there. So - saying all that - looking foward to an Apple Foldable. I only hope though they make it as large as the fold 7 - ipad Mini size 8" or so. A smaller Fold 6 size, that I also tried, was not as useful.

I know what you meant. I was tempted to switch to Android to get Fold 7 as I do want folded phone to have one device: phone and tablet but i resisted. I have a complete Apple ecosystem which I very love and do not want to mess with the comfort zone.

Will be passing on the Apple Crease. I want a 20th Anniversary iPhone (no fold).
Having used foldables, truly the crease (which will even be smaller for the iphone fold than any previous device) disappears very quickly with usage, even with older devices. Your eyes stop seeing it.

I still do not see the value of a screen that unfolds into a square.
I think a large square screen is good for multi tasking, viewing photos, reading/any scrolling content, working on documents, and generally most apps and games if they are optimized for it. Basically everything except wide aspect ratio video.

Seems like a foldable is a solution looking for a problem.

Pros:
Small
Light
2x screen when unfolded

Cons:
More expensive
Less battery life
Less features
Smaller thermal envelope
Fragile
Moving parts
Bulky when folded
Can’t put it in a protective case and still use it

I have to admit, I had one of those Siemens SL55 phones in the early 2000’s. The women thought it was cute.

I get it foldables aren’t for everyone but calling them a solution looking for a problem misses the point. They’re not trying to fix phones they’re expanding what a phone can be.

We’ve hit the limit with slabs, same shape, same experience. Foldables push the form factor forward. Yeah, there are trade-offs, but every new tech starts that way. The difference is they actually offer something useful, a compact phone that opens into a tablet-class screen for work, media, and multitasking.
Your old Siemens might’ve been cute, but modern foldables combine that cool factor with real performance. Innovation always looks unnecessary until it becomes normal.

For me, two main problems with Face ID are unlocking when my phone is lying on a table next to me eg. while working on my laptop or while eating, and unlocking when my face is half obscured by my pillow. These are issues for me very regularly, and I never had any issues with Touch ID. Plus Touch ID was better for Apple Pay. With Face ID you still have to swipe up to open the phone so its only advantages are basically unlocking to read notifications and opening locked apps--neither of these are significant to me.

I do not know much about the Android foldable, but do they do some side-by-side app stuff?

Because that would be appealing to me. Sometimes I need to pay attention to 2 things!

I believe so. I don't have one but recall seeing it.
