I saw someone using a Fold yesterday... It looked kinda ridiculous and somewhat clumsy. To each their own...but I do not see myself needing or using a folding phone. I do need portability, connectivity, and the ability to have one hand free when using it most of the time. A folding phone seems like it will need two hands most of the time. I'm sure there will be design compromises toward making it "somewhat" usable with one hand while closed. Nonetheless, just because something "can" be done does not mean it "should" be doe.

Apple has proven it can make a really cool, lightweight ultra-thin iPhone...that nobody is buying because of the necessary compromises.

For a book style foldable, 4:3 when unfolded is a far superior aspect ratio and the shape will be appreciated in reviews for movie watching and multitasking. Tri-folds are even better in this sense, but concerns for the longterm durability of tri-folds remains. If tri-folds weren’t so expensive it would be less of an issue.

I feel like a wide format book style foldable phone is kind of just a flip phone turned on its side...doesn't seem like too much of a leap for Samsung to be able to bring something like that to market. I like the idea of it, I don't think the current book style foldables are the right format. This should be an iPad that can be made smaller, not a phone that can be made bigger. It's going to be a crowded field with iPhone options including the XX, foldable, 18, 18P, 18PM, Air 2, 17e, etc. all available at once. But an iPad mini you can put in your pocket would be something that would stand out as new and probably useful. But I'll be really disappointed if it only has Touch ID, not Face ID, at any price or size.

There will be a moment someday where Apple aays "got cha!" To Samsung.

*Apple releases super long iSword

So lame. With a market cap in the trillions, I’d much prefer if Apple (and Samsung, et al) would just focus their squadrons of engineers to improve the existing everyday hardware and software that is making them filthy rich. Messing around with BS ‘aspirational’ products no one is asking for to score points with shareholders is a waste of time (overpriced premium slim phones with poor battery life, ultra premium VR headsets and folding phones - who buys this stuff anyway.)

Let me blow some of your minds, what if i told are at any given point Samsung has multiple prototypes of their devices in various form factors?

Here are a prototype Samsung Fold 5 with multiple different aspect ratios.

No surprise that Samsung will once again simply copy Apple.
As much as I am an Apple fanboy myself, I find this comment rather ridiculous.

Don’t you see the flaw in your comment? Since Samsung first released their first foldable phone in 2019, couldn’t one argue then that in fact Apple is copying Samsung? One could also argue that Apple copied Meta when they released Vision Pro then.

For the record, I am not saying Apple is copying Samsung, nor the other way round in most cases. Sure, there will be pioneers but competition will always follow, which is a great thing for consumers.

Yes, because it is Apple who has been releasing foldables since 2019?😂
No it’s because Samdung has a history of grossly copying Apple and stealing iPhone IP. In fact, they and Google with Android, based their whole bloody galaxy S series foundational tech on ripping off Apple. They are actually a very dishonorable chaebol, with a very shady history in SK.

Guess that's just the risk you accept when your primary parts supplier is a prolific plagiarist.
Samsung
Motorola
Huawei
Oppo
Google
OnePlus
Honor
Vivo

That's eight smartphone manufacturers that have worked fearlessly creating their own versions of the folding smartphone.

For years Apple has sat back, twiddled their thumbs and failed to create anything in this established sector. Finally they decide to step out of the shadows and into the light.

It will be interesting to see if they can compete.

Will be interesting to see this device. With both Apple and Samsung having a similar sized Fold, will be very interesting to see which will be better. Expecting Apple to optimize iOS for the new screen dimensions.

My base model $1199 iPhone Pro Max 256GB costs more than a base model MBA 13" or 15".

Very uninterested in spending MBP 14" or even 16" money for a flagship phone with a hinge.

Experienced hinge failures in 1997 & 2007 and they're hella expensive.

I'd want to see how Apple solves the engineering problem of creases over 2,000 folding movements.

idk, but these all seem like the same passpoort design of the original microsoft surface fold, or oppo fordable design. So i dont think Samsung is plagiarising Apple's design, BUT they're all taking designs of products that are already on the market
