My big question about this: what video conferencing application do people use that actually sends out 4K video? I have a very fast Fios connection at home and never see Zoom sending out more than a tiny outgoing video size. It's never ever approached 1080p. So what's the advantage? Are people using 4K webcams to record video directly for vlogging and whatnot?
I use a Mac-centric software called Ecamm to record 4k video locally using a capture card for streaming and whatnot, and someone could use the same software to achieve what you're describing.

It's less about image resolution and more about image quality and framing control. The Samsung display lets in more light and is less saturated than the Studio Display. Since the camera module can be removed by the user (it snaps onto the S9 monitor) it's feasible that you could upgrade it without needing to replace your monitor or buy a dedicated webcam.

I'm still searching for a good monitor for the Mac mini. So thanks for the useful infos in this thread!

Could you explain how you calibrated the Samsung display? Is this something you would recommend for someone who is not a professional (or even amateur) artist?
To calibrate the Samsung display, you use your iPhone with the Smart Things app, and it takes all of two minutes to calibrate it. The result is a display that looks much better than out of the box, but it's not drastically different than Apple.

If you wanted a high degree of calibration, you would use a professional calibration tool from Spyder or similar, but it's not worth it, IMO.

After buying two Studio Displays, I returned them.
Problems : The webcam in low-light is horrific, the dual-speakers setup doesn't work natively out of the box, the keyboard controls don't work well for dual-display setup out of the box, and my neck started to hurt a little bit after 2 weeks (I know, I need one in the center, and one on the side... but it's not symmetrical lol)

The ViewFinity sounds so damn cheaply built... I can't believe the regular price is the same. Oh, and the sound is awful. At least the Studio Display was really well built, and the speakers are awesome.

I'll be buying the new Neo G9 57-inch instead, with external speakers and webcam... I considered the Opal C1 but am reading either very good or very bad reviews about it.
Can macOS actually do 240Hz? I thought it was a nightmare even getting 120Hz out of a Mac through any external display. I’m referring to the G9 you mentioned at the end.

2X4K is possible if you use two sources, but one source no, even the M2 Ultra and even the 4090 doesn't do it. It's 60Hz.

How hard or disruptive would it be to do a calibration using an iPhone and the Samsung app? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on how close that calibration gets to a more professional tool like your Spyder.
I've just started some leave from work, and so had time on my hands. I've reset the picture and calibrated with my iPhone and it's pretty good. As Caputo said, not as good as a proper calibration, but close enough that I can live with it until I can bothered doing the calibration again. It did a much better job than Apple's equivalent on the AppleTV, which degraded the picture on my OLED.

27"? Yuck. I can't imagine not having a 32" or 34" ultrawide. The ONLY thing I use or would use a 27" monitor for is gaming.
I have a corner desk and there isn't room for a bigger display. ASD is perfect for my setup. And those speakers are awesome.

Thanks for doing this. Sounds like this will be my next monitor, but I’ll wait to see if there will be any deeper discounts closer to Christmas.

I own two studio displays, and I also owned the Viewfinity S9 dispkay, both used with my Mac Studio.
In comparing the glossy and matte (i.e., nano-textured) ASD displays at the Apple store, I found the glossy was sharper for text (the matte has a slight diffusing effect), and also lacked the matte's "snowfield" effect (sparkly background on white images).

What kind of finish does your ASD have, and how does it compare to the S9 for the two attributes I mentioned?

One thing I'm not seeing discussed here is image quality. How are the ViewFinity versus Studio Display in display image quality? The Samsung is 8-bit FRC, is the Studio Display true 10-bit?
The Studio is also 8-bit FRC. The only display Apple makes that uses a 10-bit panel is the XDR.

I just recently got this for $680. It had few dead pixels so I've returned it for a replacement one. Even though I once sweared that I won't buy any Samsung products after my 4 years legal issue (which I won) with them over the washing machine I purchased, but after seeing this price tag I think it's a steal. I got Better Display for software based brightness control over keyboard and still trying to figure out how to control sound as well.

I am curious which setting do you guys use for smart calibration to match ASD or built in Display's of MacBook Air/Pro?

I ended up buying an Asus PA24ACRV, which is a 24" 2560x1440 monitor. It's been about 6 months and I'm happy with it. Only paid $350. However, now I kinda wish I'd waited as Asus has a 27" 5k coming out.

B&H has it on preorder for $800

This new model looks like the perfect monitor for me. If the reviews are good, it'll be hard for me to resist upgrading my monitor within a year.

This is the first 5k monitor with HDMI that I have seen so far. I am looking into trying to get a monitor that can hook up both to a mac mini/studio and an xbox series console (or a switch box to give multiple him inputs.)

I am looking forward to the reviews.

I'm glad more 5K displays are slowly emerging.

I only wish this Asus had even bezels all around. The thicker lower bezel is typical of cheap PC monitors as it's easy to cram all the electronics in one spot.

I am reading this as I am looking at the chin of my intel iMac.......

This would be killer if it was offered in 32". But 5k at $800 is amazing

Damn! I am already tempted. I am just waiting on Apple event. Aiming for a Mac Studio + 5k monitor + iPad Pro 13" set up but now since they decided to push the Mac Studio release for mid 2025, therefore if iMac m4 price tag and specs are good, I might simply go with an iMac and return the monitor. Does this Pro Art has Mac compatibility like brightness and sound could be adjusted via keyboard?
I am sure it will be double the price you show when it arrives in the country I live in.
