Apple display supplier Samsung is in the early stages of preparing its production line for OLED displays that are expected to be used in future models of the MacBook Pro, according to new information shared today by The Elec.

The report says that Samsung Display has begun early development of a new production process for OLED displays. This new production capacity will be used by Apple for future OLED MacBooks, according to the report.

DigiTimes has reported that Apple is tentatively scheduled to release a 16 to 17-inch MacBook Pro with an OLED display in 2022. Apple is also reportedly planning a 10.9-inch iPad and 12.9-inch iPad Pro with OLED displays for the same year.

Apple just this year released a new iPad Pro with a mini-LED display and is expected to be just weeks away from launching updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with similar display technology. DigiTimes said that Apple would allow iPad and MacBook models with OLED and mini-LED displays, which are considerably different technologies, to coexist within their respective product lineups.

Apple currently uses OLED displays in its flagship iPhones, Apple Watch models, and the Touch Bar in the current MacBook Pros. The company has yet to expand OLED technology to other products.

New MacBooks with Mini-LED this year only to be replaced by new MacBooks with OLED next year? Seems unlikely. Unless Apple now starts an annual MacBook update cycle akin to the iPhone.

Although I so wish we could just skip that lousy Mini-LED crutch and go straight to OLED MacBooks.

Can't really see the advantages of OLED over mini-LED. This is confusing.
OLED displays light each pixel individually (meaning when there are black scenes, the black is pure black), while miniLED is still an LCD panel but has multiple backlight zones to mimic the same thing OLED does, except it's worse due to not enough zones (you get blooming and some other ghosting effects), OLED is also more color accurate and doesn't require cooling

The advantage of miniLED display is that it's higher in brightness, but OLED can reproduce true HDR due to the native 1:infintiy contrast (miniLED has a typical 1:1200 or so contrast ratio when not in HDR)

I don't understand why they just don't focus on one type of technology, instead of having to juggle between three. They just released the iPads Pros with mini-LED, and now what, they release new laptops with OLED?
I can't understand the logic here.

Because these are rumours and most site make crap up as they go along. The only person who has any decent sources in Supply Chain is Kuo. You should also be aware The Elec is a Korean site, which means they have a interest to pop up certain Korean tech news. That is the same with DigitTimes to Taiwanese tech.

OLED on a PC is possibly the worst idea ever even with the current burn in migration. It just doesn't work.

basically OLED is the better display (perfect contrast, great colours, fast response times, etc) but you need to accept there is a risk that burn in might appear. OLED doesn't get as bright as LCD but for 99% of people it doesn't matter especially on small screens like a phone, tablet, laptop. that's more important for large TVs.

if you don't want to risk burn in then Mini LED is better but you're gonna have to deal with blooming/trailing all the live long day. as a result it has poorer contrast and colours.

I started reading this thinking, "this doesn't make any sense, why would Apple release a MacBook Pro with miniLed this year and switch to OLED next year?", and then I saw the source "DigiTimes". Move on guys, nothing to see here.

Mini LED was promising to offer the benefits of both technologies, but so far seems to offer slightly worst picture quality? It seems to be a technology a bit early in development to bring to market. They should wait for micro LED screens to bring the promises improvements.
Personally I'd rather wait and buy an OLED model if this rumour is true and I was interested in one of the devices mentioned.

I can't understand the logic here.

There is a bunch of reasons. First, miniLED is a more expensive, energy-hungry technology. Second, it will be a while until miniLED will reach production capacities suitable to supply all Apple products. Third, miniLED can produce the dreaded bloom effect because it relies on multiple small backlights instead of each pixel being it's own backlight.

Apple display technology is now based around the idea of dynamic display range. They have been doing some really cool stuff that allows you to produce HDR-like content on a conventional display. For example, all modern Apple devices can produce white that is brighter than white (see https://prolost.com/blog/edr). On a conventional LED display (like my 16" MBP) this is achieved by manipulating brightness, on an OLED display this is achieved by taking advantage of pixel's naturally high individual brightness and on a miniLED display this is achieved by manipulating the tiled backlights. If I were to guess, they will move the consumer line to OLED and the professional line to miniLED for more HDR. And miniLED will at some point be replaced by microLEDs.

OLED can cause burn in. The dock if set to always visible, can cause this. But don't think OLED for Macbook will happen anytime soon as the Macbook Pros are shifting to mini LED this year.

I'm currently using an OLED ThinkPad and coding on it is pretty glorious. I would take it if they can't fit a Mini LED screen into the MacBooks for some reason.

the logic is that this leak is not true...apple almost never change the display tech after 1-2 years
I think here we are talking about macbook air...Apple wants the consumer ipads/macs to be on oled, ipad air and macbook air while the prosumer devices to be on mini-led like the 11" and 12.9" ipads pro and 14 16" mbp

heres the report
The Elec reports that Samsung’s suppliers are working on a next-generation process suitable for larger OLED screens.

Samsung Display’s OLED etcher suppliers have begun the development of their new dry etchers for Gen 8.5 OLED panels, TheElec has learned […]
Dry etchers are betting at etching finer and more precise circuits compared to wet etchers.
OLED for IT applications that are 10-inch or larger required red, green and blue pixels to be aligned tightly on the panel, making the use of dry etcher optimal for their production […]
Samsung Display is expecting its customers Samsung Electronics and Apple to increase their orders for IT OLED panels going forward.
