Super exciting... Though I not paying more then the cost of a laptop for it. I tried the iPad it did not replace the laptop not even close.
I will say this, since I started using foldables I've given my wife my iPad mini and I rarely ever use my laptop. I pretty much use my foldable or my iMac anymore.

Btw: the crease in the OnePlus Open (middle) is very very minimal compared to google and Samsung. And this is tech that has been out for a while. So I am sure Apple can make this even better in 2 years from now. This is just to show some of you that the crease is already (almost) negligible.View attachment 2323495
Looks pretty bad in photos. Whilst I wouldn't buy one, (at the moment), in the flesh I was quite surprised how well they actually hold up.

Sorry to people who always scoff at innovation: this is coming and you will have to use it one day. Candy-bar style mobile set will be obsolete in 5-10 years max. Galaxy Fold is a great phone, and Apple will do better, rendering non-foldables obsolete soon.

Apple supplier Samsung Display has reorganized its Apple business team to achieve operational efficiency in the development of foldable panels, claims a new report out of Korea.

According to The Elec, Samsung wants to strengthen its capabilities in anticipation of Apple's first foldable products by integrating the expertise it has gained making Samsung foldable devices since 2019.

Samsung Display and LG Display are said to be already working on projects for Apple's foldable products, including panels with 20.25-inch dimensions, according to the report. It's not clear if the panel size relates to a specific product or a panel production process.

Apple has been known to be working on foldable display technology for some years now, filing multiple patents regarding the technology. Rumors in September 2020 indicated that Samsung was providing foldable display samples to Apple for a future foldable ‌iPhone‌, but there had been no strong indication that Apple was planning to use Samsung's technology until now.

In 2021, Bloomberg claimed that Apple had started "early work" on an ‌iPhone‌ with a foldable display, but that it had not committed to releasing a foldable device at that time. Development in 2021 had not expanded beyond a display, and Apple did not have full foldable ‌iPhone‌ prototypes.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo initially said that Apple would introduce a foldable ‌iPhone‌ in 2024, but in 2022, he revised his prediction and said that Apple is unlikely to unveil a foldable iPhone until 2025 or later. Display analyst Ross Young has also suggested 2025 is the earliest that we might see a foldable ‌iPhone‌.

This will be the phone that makes foldables the new norm.
I'm waiting for the model that folds twice.

I doubt it.
Obsolete is far too strong a term.

I can't believe we are still at the vague rumors phase. It's the end of 2023. We should have solid reports about a 2025 folding iPhone or the like.

I love my 15 Plus, but the temptation of a folding device grows with each passing year for me. There are still plenty of kinks to workout (dust protection, the crease, Qi2 charging), but Android OEM's are slowly getting there in due time.

will ever be such foldable iPhone?. Is too late, the other brands are at least 5 generations ahead by now. I have used a foldable and now they weight similarly to an iPhone 14PM. I thought they were a gimmick, but after seeing how my colleagues can show photos, play games or read PDF much more conveniently than me, I am sold. I am really tempted to switch to Android just because of a foldable phone.
The crease?, not a real issue for me, barely visible with the display on. Don’t tell me iPhone 1 was “perfect”.

Apple being so focused on form sometimes to the sacrifice of function…if there’s even a slight chance of seeing a permanent visual indication away from pristine-new 100% flatness, I can’t see how Apple would put this out.

Now. If Apple develops the tech so the screen keeps that 100% flat appearance after 100,000 openings, and at a device thickness not much more than an iPhone 15, I’ll be super impressed.
Foldable oled has been a thing for a while I’m assuming apple developed some kind of new tech/hinge that will make it so the seam isn’t visible at all. It’s really what these foldables need to feel like a finished product to me

Nope. I don‘t want to carry around an iPhone and an iPad (mini) all the time. If I can have both in one device I‘ll be glad. Pretty obvious.

That's assuming that most people carry two (or more) devices. They don't. I'd be fine with nothing more than an Apple Watch when out and about.

I think a foldable would be popular, but not everyone wants one.

I honestly don’t get this form factor.

The extra screen, case surface, and hinge takes away room from the battery. The unfolded phone is too small to be a useful tablet (to me). The square form factor doesn’t offer much when it comes to watching video that’s going to end up letterboxed.

Apple will have to do something drastically different than the other folding phones to drum up my interest here. I’m quite happy with iPhone Pro Max + iPad Air + MacBook Pro 16”.

I think some of you are putting too much weight on the crease and Apple being stopped by it. You want a foldable? -> it has to have a (barely visible) crease. Of course a minimal one, but remember the notch was huge while Android had tiny punch holes.

Look in the past: You want a better camera? -> here‘s an ever growing bump.
You want better battery life? -> here are giant phones.
You want a nicer color? -> here‘s a black one but it scratches if you just look at it.

Apple has always accepted „compromises“ like these. But who knows, maybe they‘ll shock us and release a rollable haha

That‘s until you have to move a round a lot or travel by train/plane. If I could get rid of at least one of these I‘d do it.

No, No, NO! We don't want to turn our MBP's into iPads. We want to have a keyboard in our laps while we look at a screen. We don't want glass touchscreen keyboards. We want actual physical keys.

If I want an iPad, I'll buy one (I have one). And I don't want to run iOS on a Mac, either.

So what year do you belive there will be less than 100 000 regular smartphones sold per year?

Safe to say we'll see a bunch users on this forum who will now miraculously see the benefits of this form factor. They'll somehow only now "just get it," because "it just works." Lol

Whilst foldable screens still have crease lines at the hinge, I'm not interested. If they can eliminate that then I'd buy one.

I just can't see them doing that though, they'd have to create a technology that flattens creases indefinitely within milliseconds of a screen being opened up flat. No compromises either - I don't want a bezel covering the crease or anything like that.
Not only that but as soon as the crease shows up people will go to Apple and demand a new phone.

Agreed. The crease is disappearing over time. And no, the crease doesn't "get worse" over time, which is one of the great foldable myths. I mean, maybe the crease would get slightly more apparent if you own a foldable for 4 or 5 years but why would anyone own one that long? I recently bought my fifth foldable and the crease hasn't gotten worse over time on any of them, regardless of the manufacturer or style (flip or fold). Also, people that have never owned one like to complain about thickness and weight when foldables today weigh right at or slightly less than the iPhone 14/15 PM and are only slightly thicker. What a time to be alive!
I have tried the Z Fold 4, Pixel Fold, and OnePlus Open. All of them actually were more comfortable in my pocket than my S22 Ultra. I found the OnePlus Open to have the best compromise in screen size, comfort, and ease of use.
