So having posted in the wrong thread about this, I thought it best to start a new one.

I'm looking to upgrade my mac pro to SSD, its a early 2008 model, and is now painfully slow, I'm assuming to the fact the drives are all aging, but I'd like to get a couple more years out of it.

So having noticed the massive improvement in upgrading my macbook pro with an SSD, I'm looking to do the same to the Mac Pro.

Samsung EVO 850 & OWC Accelsior S is the hardware combination I'm looking at, with the intention of using the SSD as the boot drive.

I do want to check however
1. It will be able to boot from this
2. The PCI-e slots in the mac pro are 100% compatible with this card.

I did have a response in the wrong thread, but before I blow £300 on all this, I want to check I'm 100% getting the right thing..... Any help appreciated. :)

I've never seen any complaints about the Accelsior S not being bootable. However, on OWC's product page for the Accelsior S, they do warn that you can not boot Windows from it.

I did nave an Apricorn Velocity Solo X1 with my Mac Pro 3,1 (2008) and had some bad experiences with it, so I'd recommend avoiding that card with the 3,1. The Velocity Solo X2 did work better albeit at a slightly higher price.

According to that thread the the X2 is only bootable with the 4,1 mac pro and above, so it's no good for me :(

From the Apricorn site:

Read the last page of the thread you linked to. There seems to be an issue with bootcamp. But a workaround is provided. OS X seems fine.

I've double checked that the OWC one will boot too, with OWC..... There's no problems there.

I think I'll just jump in and go with my original plan. I've already got one of the ssd's i was looking at which I've been chuffed with.

Installed and working perfectly.

Now its just the age old question of whether OS X trim on the samsung 850 EVO is ok.

The changed in usability of the machine really is day and night.

^^^^Yes, TRIM should be employed! I have 5 SSDs (all Samsung and 2 of them are EVOs)!

What is this trim your referring to? I did the same, and don't know of any way of squeezing any other performance out of it.
