okay, so common sense and intelligence is only applicable to non computing devices in which case and idiot is an idiot but if that same idiot plugs in a stylus backwards they aren't an idiot. So when Darrell and his other brother Darrell lock-up their snow thrower or catch their toaster on fire that's okay, but if they hose their Note 5 it's Samsung's Fault. Gotcha.

I can build an entire friggin computer without having to worry about what direction to plug in any of the parts. They made a mistake man just admit it...

The real design flaw is that the phone will probably only see one legitimate android version update and performance will be butchered in year 2 and support ceased year 3. You have to buy a new samsung phone every year so don't even worry about the pen

Great, me too. I can also build an entire friggin engine in a car from the bottom end through the installation of a turbo and programming of the ECU and TCU including but I can easily f-up the entire thing putting E85/the wrong octane gas into it because the pumps fit into the tank of any gasoline engine just fine. Bottom line is Darwin awards are handed out all the time for not reading the manual or opening your eyes.

Again, I see the point you're trying to make but it's not something I agree with. I see people use windex to clean their eyeglasses all the time too and then wonder why the AR Coating crazes. Is the Lab responsible for an inferior product? How about the AR Coating manufacturer? Nope and Nope. User error. Ever see a car with tinted windows that look slightly purple? All the time.....incorrectly cleaned with Ammonia based products. Yep....design flaw in the material.

Really? So my AT&T Note 3 which runs perfectly and just got it's fourth update since I bought it new (just this week) is a unicorn Samsung device? Ironically the problem they have is their phones actually DON'T require an updated hardware device in order to compete.

Now excuse me while I put any number of the hundreds of spark plugs that will fit in my lawn mower. If it screws in all the way it will work right? I couldn't possibly damage the engine by doing so could I?

The question I would ask here is 'what is the advantage gained by the current design?'

If there were some reason - even one as simple as aesthetics - that they provided no method of preventing this - then it's almost acceptable. It might still be a dumb choice, but at least there would be a reason. In this case though it appears that it's just a plain oversight - that some engineers who can't see the world past their own desk were allowed to finalize this design with no accounting for how devices will be used in the real world.

It's definitely a problem. Like I said in an earlier post, Samsung has to respond to this in the proper way: deal with it on a customer service end and to reaffirm people with information (ie. don't put it in the wrong way).

But it's not a design flaw. It was designed to go in one way. Many things are designed to go in one way; we don't call those things design flaws.

Otherwise, I agree with you. This is ultimately still Samsung's problem to resolve.

My reference to change of tune is related to the fact previously you wouldn't even admit there was a problem and indeed suggested people were 'reaching' by suggesting there was one.

Out of all the positive design aspects of this phone the stylus is the one poor one that has been identified. Samsung very cleverly designed its predecessors to stop a stylus being inserted the wrong way but didn't include that criteria this time around. It's a design oversight and it could be argued a design flaw by the design allowing user error to be commuted easier than in previous models. I don't know why people here are so offended by the word 'flaw'. I've had critiques with clients where the word has been used about some of my work and I don't throw a hissy fit over it. It's a loose term at the end of the day. The stylus here does the job if used correctly.

I don't get the correlation. There is a gear called park to prevent you from driving forward. And there is a parking brake. And on top of that you have to push in the brake fully to remove the car from park. There are several stops that would prevent a user from just pushing the gas accidentally and moving forward.

Then again bending your iPhone is user error and I never met anybody that did it, but Apple reinforced the chassis frame to prevent user error becoming a costly mistake on the leaked iPhone 6S. They listened to the complaints and acted it seems. Why would or should they do that? Is it because complaints forced better design? Probably. If you never complain nothing changes.

So how many times have we seen on the news people driving through strip mall windows or putting the car in the wrong gear. Parking brakes aren't required to be activated and Brake Shift Interlocks are a voluntary implementation since 2006 and excludes heavy commercial vehicles.

In the end, it's a valid comparison....or you can go back to any number of the other examples provided in this thread. Perhaps your the odd user out there, but I've never once accidentally attempted to put the Note stylus in backwards. Seriously, only a fool completely not paying attention would pick it up backwards or turn it around and do that.

Happens all the time in manuals too though. My family owned several dealerships and I can't tell you how important it was to insure on a test drive the customer was made aware of how to put the car into the correct gear. Even on my last car you had to push down and back to get reverse but I saw people put it directly into first thinking that was reverse. It happens.

meh......I'm a fan of DSG's now vs manuals. Way faster than manuals and more consistent. Although my ZO6 is a manual as during it's production that's all that was offered. The new ones offer an 8spd auto though.

Can you go backwards on an iOS installation? Is that in relation to the tens of people on this forum who got very upset they couldn't go back to iOS 6? Why would you want to go backwards and install outdated software? It's a bit different to a piece of product design with a weird shaped hole. Maybe again I am missing something?

Not even close to being the same thing. I had a IP4 with antenna issues. I would hold it in a normal fashion and the phone would lose service. Rendering the phone useless as a communication device.
There were no instructions as to how to hold the phone to avoid this issue. This was through normal use and the phone was rendered useless.....through normal use.
You did not have to put something in backwards. There was no user error involved.

I have a 7 year old that loves to use my Note 4 and now my Note 5. He uses the pen to draw mustaches on photos of me and his siblings. He gets quite amused by it. 🙂

NEVER once has he inserted the pen backwards or attempted to insert it back wards. It doesn't seem to occur to him to do that. It seems like a normal function to put it back in the most logical way. Which is the exact way it came out.

So this is something nice for people to poke fun at Samsung. I do find it amusing that people would put the pen in backwards. But stupid is as stupid does.....

If you do give your phone to a small child and they break something....shame on you....not the phone maker or the child. Adults should know better.

My ipad has the iPhoto feature that you can blur and distort photos. My son has so much fun with that as well...in fact all of us do. So if my son drops my ipad and the glass breaks should I blame Apple? They should know kids are using and make it survive a drop?
Or maybe people should use their electronics with reasonable caution and care

I have owned my Note 4 for nearly a year now and never have I tried to even put the pen backward, there is a huge difference between the front and back of the Pen.

If you give a kid your and they drop it and the screen shatters, its your fault, same if they put the pen backwards. Your fault.

Hey next Samsung should make a new safety feature that erases the phone if you hold the power button down for 5 seconds. 1, 2, 3 or 4 seconds and it just turns off the phone. But hey, don't blame Samsung if you erase your phone...user error!!! It is in the manual. You would have to be an idiot not use that button as they intended. Your dumbass fault you dumb end user. Everyone is so dumb. Who would hold a power button for more than 4 seconds?? I know I never have!! /s

But it's not too dissimilar to bendgate in the way that bending your phone is also user error. I've never bent mine. The phone isn't designed to be bent but if you put it in your back pocket (which is stupid) and sit on it, it may well bend. Then again accidents happen and manufacturers react accordingly. More people didn't bend their phones than did, yet Apple changed the design, why? They didn't have to. If Samsung issue a fix for this, what will we call that?

Unfortunately for some this has nothing to do with discussing design and oversights but more to do with judging the opinions of others based on what phone they own. If you own an iPhone (like me), then your are frowned upon by the Samsung protection brigade for offering an opinion on this. It'll be very interesting when the next iPhone is out what some here will say about it. I have a feeling hypocrisy and contradiction is going to be pretty obvious. 🙂

You do know that if you do put the pen in backwards that you can pull it back out and your Note 5 will work almost exactly as before?
The ONLY thing that will not work as before is the stylus notification software.
The phone will still function as normal.......
