Looks beautiful. Runs terrible.

I'm Not sure why people make posts like this. Either you have no experience with android or you're just jumping on the bandwagon effect to make an comment about their operating software being "Terrible". That's entirely false. I have personally tested it and it's not terrible at all, it's completely different from iOS, but it's unique in its own right. And Nor am I defending android, because I am an iPhone user. Just correcting what you stated is false.

The Apple community is such an echo chamber.

"Windows sucks. Android sucks."

No they don't; not anymore. They haven't for years and years.

They're good now and your company is run by an accountant.

He's selling 5 year old hardware at premium prices because his fanbase are irrational and insular.

Young people adapt in milliseconds and don't remember a time when non-Apple software was bad.

Apple is a dead man walking unless they take their heads out of their asses and compete on the playing field of the future rather than the playing field of the past.

If you like big phones, apple doesn't really have a phone to compete with the note.

The iphone 8 is mostly the size of the "normal" S8.. (which luckily is the perfect size for my hands, so i don't have this problem)

And sadly have to agree, that i prefer the front of the S8 line to the iphone 8, "thanks" to the notch.
(not sure if i posted this yet)

2016 portrait mode on iPhone: "What a stupid gimmick, Apple is doomed!"
2017 Portrait mode ripoff on Note 8: "You see, now that's innovative!"

How can the Live Focus of Note 8 be a ripoff of iPhone's Portrait Mode if iPhone's Portrait Mode is a ripoff of Galaxy's Selective Focus?
Do you know how many bokeh-effect pictures I've already shot on my S7 Edge? And before that on S5 (have to admit that on S5 it was a gimmick).

Edit: not to forget the genius Pan Focus effect in S7 Edge.

And still a curving screen makes zero sense, unless you like reflections.
The reflections are not a big deal. The main problem is it just breaks easily.

Tiny battery useless tiny pen you’ll never use and crap broken effect that doesn’t work. S8 plus is better for less by miles.

I’m still waiting for the first note 8 fire to happen. I think they almost canned the note line as it’s now so similar and unnecessary.

I hate to be down on a phone but I genuinely like the rest of their offerings and this phone is just a **** sandwich that no one should buy.

Indeed I would agree it's not the best.

However think of it this way for a moment.
Say that you, personally, like having a finger print sensor on you mobile phone.

What's the better option. Having one in a less than ideal position or not having one at all ?

if it's not in an ideal position, i wouldn't like having a finger print sensor on my mobile phone and instead use passcode.

Maybe, but then so has the quality of their products. Apple hasn't been shy with their increases in price either. Let's face it, Apple is overpriced for what are effectively midrange phones. For all the idea the iPhone is a flagship device, spec wise, it has a midrange screen, less than most ram and lacks numerous features of a flagship, e.g. Fast charging, expandable memory etc
I agree the paper specs are middle of the road for iPhone.

But ever consider the idea that those companies have to offer those types of features to even have a chance at competing with Apple? For example, Apple doesn't need the same ram because the hardware-software integration uses the ram much more efficiently than open-source software and generic hardware.

from the engadget review:

i wonder why it defaults to a lower resolution... to save battery? performance concerns?

To even have to think about changing the resolution on your phone is a massive fail. People love their smartphone because they are a lot simpler than computers - let’s not start all over again

$930 Samsung? Nobody bats an eye. $999 iPhone? EVERYBODY PANIC

Bad comparison for these reasons:

* Note 8 BOM (bill of materials) is higher than that of iPhone (always was, we'll see if something changes with new iPhone)
* you can preorder Note 8 and Get $230 worth of goodies (memory card, 360-camera etc.)
* you can already get BOGO for Note 8 (on T-mobile)

At least it has one ;)

that's like saying: at least my blackberry has a physical keyboard.

Actually it's the worst position for a THUMB print sensor/scanner. It's great as a Fingerprint sensor/scanner. My reasoning is I can pick up the phone and scan any 3 larger fingers of any hand easily without you or anyone else overlooking my shoulder to see which I used.

who would use a thumb on the back side? you use your thumb to grip the side, so obviously you would use either your index, middle, or ring.

and since the position isn't in the center of the back side, i couldn't reach the scanner without readjusting my grip. it's a terrible position for the scanner.

Where is it? I'm not up to date on Samsung stuff. On the back?

I have the s8+ and 2 iPhones. They are pretty much the same for speed. The s8+ tends to load websites a bit faster. Some games will load faster on the iPhone. Generally speaking, both phones are quick. Sound quality on the newest Samsungs is MUCH better, especially for the microphone.

Tell us what it's like in 6 months. ;)

I am in the exact same boat. I want something cutting edge. I hope apple brings it I really do

I could write a book on my thoughts about this. It's a very worrying thought for me.... to observe you "wanting something cutting edge" suggests that you're overlooking and under-appreciating what already exists today, right now. It also suggests that you won't be satisfied for long as soon as you get what you consider cutting edge.

I like the bezel-less, but I'm still not sold on the curved edges... it distorts the image (at least with the current S models)... maybe if the curve was sharper (providing a flatter face), just my preference I guess.

I don’t get it either - what does it really add to the equation other than the fact that they can get a higher screen to front ratio? No picture, movie or website has ever been designed to fold. I always think of a wrinkled projector screen when I see it

i don't think i can agree with all of this.. but definitely with the screen and fast charging part.

but the past few years the iphone has always been the leader in performance, the CPU has been nothing short of amazing.
yes it has less ram, but iOS also needs less RAM than android. (but i can agree that we don't get any of the money savings apple makes here).

expandable memory has some advantages like saving money on big storage or maybe switch data with another phone, but it is also annoying to have to micromanage where to save the data. or you can tell android to use it all as one big storage, but this has a big impact on performance, because the SD is much slower than internal storage. the storage of the iphone is always very fast and you don't need to make sure every app uses the right place to save things. but yes, it's more expensive.

Not going to disagree about performance of the iPhone compared to its peers, though my key point is that the iPhone is made up of much cheaper components because they have a lower spec, e.g. Low res LCD v high res OLED screen, less ram etc, but is typically the most expensive phone on the block. It will be interesting to see how the iPhone 8 price plays out next week, because if the rumours are true about the new specs, then either the iPhone 7S is going to much cheaper, or the 8 is going to be much more expensive than the "norm" to maintain a decent price differential reflecting the cost of components in each.
