Honestly i have the 6s plus and the 7edge and i love both phones..to me they look very similar..i don't consider the s7edge camera leaps and bounds better then the iPhone's almost two year old camera

Oh I do....i also have the 6s+ and S7 edge. They are leaps apart in quality. How is the camera 2 years old? Apple said they improved the camera in the 6s over the 6 line.
Evan last years Galaxy line beat the 6s....

The instant focus alone trumps all other phones. Better low light is a bonus. Photo quality was already very good for the last several years from most flagships.

I didn't know Samsung started manufacturing their own cameras.

I will say owning a Z5 that I find those numbers questionable if it scores 87 and is joint second best smartphone camera on their chart.

I really like the Z5 and it has a decent camera but it's no way as good or better than a number of those devices which I have owned that score lower.

With that in mind, I don't really trust their findings tbh, so I'll stick with actually using them and discovering which takes better shots for me.

I think there could be a few devices on their list that shouldn't be as high as they have them, and likewise things like the iPhone 6S Plus takes in normal use better photos than my Motorola X Force (droid turbo 2) which is still very decent, but shouldn't IMHO get same score as the 6S Plus based on my own usage and taking lots of snaps with them.

Samsung however, undoubtedly make some of the best flagship cameras and deserve to be in top positions, but some of the others sailing around the top - leave me questioning them and their methodology.

I thought the Nexus 6P would be in the 87 group, based on the reviews I've watched.

I also thought the G4 would be at least in the 86 group based on my personal experience. My sister had the G4.

S7 series focus tracking is amazing. Not long ago bulky dedicated cameras struggled with focus tracking and now we have amazing focus tracking that fits in the pocket.

Yeah the 6P (just sold mine last week) definetly in day to day usage takes better snaps than my Z5. It's discrepancies like these that make you wonder about the whole testing thing.

Like I say their results don't really mean much to me, I'll just continue to stick to using the myriad of devices I go through and discover the good, the bad & the ugly from there.

That being said at the end of the day there's only a handful of points separating all the flagships over last couple of years which generally for end customer is a good thing because it means you're getting a decent smartphone camera whatever flagship phone you opt for ....

Are you guys reading the individual reviews and score breakdown instead of relying on just the overall score? DxO breaks it down into photo and video. Some phones are competitive in one area but weaker in the other hence the lower overall score.

They have been manufacturing the sensor for a few years now although not all of their phones have their own sensors. Some will have Sony sensors and some Samsung sensors. It's a lottery as to which sensor you get it's not even region specific like the processors. Much like the Samsung and TSMC chips in the 6S/6S plus.

I don't doubt that the S7 is the reigning camera champion and I think the 6S plus is in the right place. However I don't understand why the 6S edge plus is ranked higher than the note 5 and the S6, do they not all use the same camera?

Yep they are the same (S6 Edge + & Note 5 cameras), backed with same software interface and features and exact same software processing afterwards. They should be identical scoring.

And under no circumstance is the Z5 better overall than the Note 5. Note 5 & S6 Edge + are a lot better than the Z5. And yes, I read the breakdown.

Yup. But is this really news? Weren't all the Galaxy 6 models and Note 5 last year already considered better cameras than the latest iPhones?

That no-one here is actually debating. However there are some glaring discrepancies on that DXO list that would then make you question them generally about their methodology and that's the crux as many folks here hold these up as some form of 'epitaph' of scientific proven factual standards.

The Z5 (as good as it is) in my own experience certainly isn't better than the Note 5 or as good as the S6 Edge plus. The Droid Turbo 2 / Moto X Force isn't better than the 6S Plus, or magically better than the Moto X Pure/Style which has exactly the same camera sensor and software ... The S6 Edge plus isn't better than the Note 5 with its same hardware & software. Yet according to their scoring, they are. Which leaves you wondering even after reading their finer details, how they got this result; when from first hand experience it simply isn't the case as far as I've experienced anyway.

If people want to use dxo as their internet talking point, they should. I determined long before they started evaluation of mobile sensors they were no help in determining what camera to buy.

Compare the S7 edge camera with the iphone 7 (as well the phone). The 6s is last gen in the phone world and more comparable with the S6.

Yes the Z5s camera sucks ass relative to the competition. How it ranked at the top prior to the S7 edge is farcical.

Thus, DXO Mark scores mean nothing to me.

Also I find it strange how much the camera is such an important criteria to alot of people here. I thought only girls used the camera on their phones. Even they dont guve a rats ass about the tiny difference between two brands of cameras. I actually prefer a metal or glass shell than a good camera. Who really gives a monkeys about the difference between the iphone 6s and s7 edge camera? Its the phone design and branding that is more important in the high end space.

It's a good camera, rating it decently is one thing. It should be rated 'decently'. But it's certainly not better than a number of those on that list.

It's noticeably in use not as good as the Note 5 / Edge + and you only have to go over on XDA to see the number of issues with pink casting in images for many users.

I'm not saying it's not a decent camera, but the fact they put it on top of every other camera until now is very dubious and casts doubt over their testing methodology. I've taken enough shots with the Z5 in the 5 months of owning it, in all manner of lighting to know it's good but not the best camera on a phone by a mile.

I have a feeling the S7 camera is going to beat the iPhone 7 camera, even if it's a tiny margin. And then there's also the Note 6 which releases around the same tine as the iP7.

What world do you live in? Take a look around at photo opportunities in real life and the OVERWHELMING majority of camera's being used are those in smartphones. At my kid's school for anything...nearly all parents are using their smartphones. Same goes for their sports. I go to a decent amount of pro sport events---EVERYONE is using their smartphone camera, whether it's for sharing over social networks or just to record what they feel are worthwhile moments. My wife and I go out to a restaurant with a group of our friends...guess what kind of camera's people are using? I'm at the park with my dogs and guess what type of camera most people are using?

It may not be important to you but I'd wager that the camera is very near the top of most used functionality of smartphones.

But that is just your evaluation tbh.....I didn't see where they rated the Z5 the best on a camera phone. Maybe you have a faulty unit? I don't know......
