I’m trying to decide if it’s strange or funny or something between those how quickly I’ve lost interest in my S8+, let alone the S9. Seems like Samsung shouldn’t have dropped the ball with NEE security updates, as at least I can’t use a daily driver that’s falling way behind in security updates. Getting the updates every two months instead of every month was something I could live with, but now we’re in February and my patch level is still in November. WTF Samsung?

I can't wait to see how the S9 software looks. If Samsung kills it software wise and I can get my hands on a good trade in deal with the 8+, I might make a return to Android. Also largely dependent on Apple's shtick with iOS 12 and the 2018 iPhones. Definitely not pre-ordering the S9 or S9+.

My question is: how much better can smartphone cameras really get? For how much longer can that be used as an effective selling point for consumers? The cameras in phones are already SO good.

Camera is big point for me.
I have thousands of photos on my phone.
I'm all for improvements across the board, nothing is fast enough, last long enough and looks good enough as far as I'm concerned.
If I'm spending a 1000+ (NZ) on a phone, it better be better than my old phone and then some...

Mobile phone cameras have possibly the highest ceiling of most features. They'll continue to bridge the gap to dedicated cameras. Much improvement to come.

Can't wait to see this in a few weeks. No matter how much they improve the sensor there's one thing they can't really improve and that's the sensor size. They can't get much bigger because people want thin phones. Here's a nice graphic to show you how the sensor size compares. Pink is a cell phone sensor size. This is the physical size of the sensor.

Yeah but they let Apple have planned obsolescence all to themselves....Apple can have slowing down phones to spur sales of new devices all to themselves.....

I just moved from an S8 to a Pixel 2. The Pixel camera in most ways is a massive step up from what was already a great S8 camera.

For me, computational photography is the way forward - you're right about cameras in general (e.g. physical aspects). But the actual photos can still improve hugely, and within 5 years time, only professionals will be buying DSLR's.

Allot of people liked that feature too. Personally I would rather charge my phone than turn it off and take off the back and change the battery. But I understand other like the battery replacement route.

I've seen photos from the Pixel 2 and they are so far past any other phone camera, it's insane. You're right about computational photography -- Google realized it before everyone else and that's why they are where they are with the Pixel cameras.

Interesting video. I've not really been keeping up with the rumors much. I'm enamored with the Pixel 2 and the Pixel line after frustrations with the Samsung User Experience.

I have been spoiled by incredible stereo sound of my Pixel 2 and my iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X (during the month I had it. ). I wonder how the S9 is going to sound.

The camera rumors intrigue me. I could see myself trading my S8+ in for an S9 to get a try with the camera. It might be worth it since I'm not doing much with my S8+ between battling lag on it and putting the attention I used to give it onto my Pixel 2.

However I have zero interest in letting Samsung have another go at shooting painful beams into my irises. No way I'm letting their dots touch my whole face after the intense progressive pain the iris scanner on my S8+ and Note 7 put my poor eyes through. I will take touch ID. And they can also keep their animoji knockoffs, too.

I know, that was my first reaction. But I'm not totally against it, if there ends up being good 3rd party development for it.

Would be nice if I could easily find a buy price for their more premium phones. If I wanted an emergency phone, I'd get a flip-phone.

It wasn't truly water resistance. It depended on the port cover and the inside of the removable back cover.

I don’t care for the Animoji because when I made them on my X using the dot projector for longer than the quick second it takes to unlock, it made my eyes feel a bit weird. I’m a bit wary of this technology’s effects on the eyes. I would still try it as an unlocking method. I had no problems with Face ID for that purpose.

What I and the kids really loved on my S8+ has been the crazy Snapchat-like filters for the camera. They work pretty well. Just like the AR stickers on the Pixel 2. The ability to liven up photos seems welcome by all ages.

In the time that I had the X, I didn’t see the same excitement and interest in the Animoji even among the 10-15 crowd that surrounds me as a carpooling mom. I noticed when the kids do use Animoji, they just like to bombard each other with a row of regular emojis. Sometimes they use stickers and gifs, but that’s pretty rare.

They talk about eating a LOT. So the food emojis rule. The poop emoji used to be really popular but I think that one has had its day. It’s been overexposed and once it was turned into a pillow and sold everywhere, that was probably the beginning of the end for Mr. Poop. The kids give zero craps for a talking poop. 😛

I do think Samsung has an advantage debuting the S9 in the spring. I find myself drawn to the idea of having the new phone and its camera along for the start of spring and summer sports season and vacations. There is no way on Gods green earth that I am going to take the sim out of my Pixel 2 so this would just take the place of my S8+ and have to work on WiFi. I do hope they restore the stereo audio recording capabilities back to the near perfection I enjoyed on my S7 Edge. That’s the killer feature for me with Samsung phones.

I’ve spent a hefty portion of the winter feeling half dead from a pneumonia-like illness and seeing tidbits on the S9 is cheering me up. Gah, I can’t help it. I’m a phonaholic.
