I really want Apple to be leading the research, release a fully completed product and then watch Samsung panic and rush out a heavily flawed and unreliable product again.

Apple already did release a fully completed product, which is the Apple Watch. As far as leading the research, the Apple Watch can only expand so far with notifications and being a reflection of your iPhone, indicating there has been plenty of rumors that they are working on additional health sensors and bands that will have other health monitoring tools built into them.
Also, why Samsung? Do you think they feel threatened by the Apple Watch? I'm not necessarily seeing why Samsung should be the one singled out here? What about Fitbit and Garmin? Those two manufactures are huge competitors against the Apple Watch.
Also, Samsung never "Rushed" out the Note. They released the Note the same time as it does every year, they just had a manufacturing issue they encountered.
BB did attract a certain group of people (mostly office people) and I agree it was a good phone.
iPhone and the what followed attracted majority of people because it was designed for use by anyone from kids to elderly people.
