Truly, truly, truly unbelievable. This is such a boneheaded move by Apple.

So while Apple is off buying beats for who knows what, Samsung is buying the company responsible for their own voice recognition technology... real bright Apple.

Why the hell does Samsung need this? Their devices run Android so don't they already have this with S Voice?

Are they doing it just to piss off Apple?

----------

Interesting.....

S Voice isn't part of Android, it's part of TouchWiz and is powered by Nuance too (as someone has already pointed out in this thread): It makes as much sense for Samsung to buy Nuance as it does Apple. Personally, I would prefer Nuance to remain independent and license their tech out to avoid this "hoarding" of technology that's becoming more common

Apple can't easily bring this in house. Nuance owns a lot of patents in this area and isn't afraid to sue infringers into submission. That said, Apple should buy, develop, or license long term all technology critical to iOS.

You ... you really don't understand just how important Nuance are. There will be a biblical outcry. It's not just a case of 'discontinue it, **** happens'.

Agreed...

But...

Perhaps it doesn't have be be an either/or situation though... Perhaps any plans could have more.. nuance.

Perhaps Apple buys Nuance for it's speech and related products/patents.. Sell off the eDoc/OCR/swipe(?) stuff if they decide to...

The company, Nuance, is operating at a loss, under this heavy load of as you point out important, yet legacy products, and years of bad customer relations.. lots of baggage...

What if.. Apple gave it away?

Keep the people and any new tech in development they need, in-house, but the patents, licenses, the legacy products, all made open-source.

Hell, Apple could even do some quick math re: how much these legacy commitments cost to maintain, and form a charitable organization to oversee the continued support of those products,(Considering Apple wouldn't be paying a license to Nuance, they could direct that money into this, may be enough by itself?) until such a time that some new company, using the now free/open tech, develops a better version. The new and improved version could come from Samsung, IBM, Google, or three doctors working in a garage somewhere... After a new player became established, Apple could shutter the support without drama.

Apple would get control of the tech they want for their current and future products, jump-start the next generation of development in speech tech, and potentially reduce the costs to all those people and organizations dependent on these products every day.

(Oh and I'm sure there's some way all of this could serve as a huge tax write off as well)

Looking at Apple in the Tim Cook era, I think this, or something like it, could be possible.

Siri, how much do you cost? ;-)

When oh when is Apple gonna jettison this albatross known as Samsung?

I find Siri incredibly useful.

I think the people who claim Siri blows are those who first tried it on the 4S, got frustrated after a few hiccups and never touched it again. Siri has come a long way since then.

The recognition even in a crowded car on my 5C is extremely accurate and the hands-free "Hey Siri" works well there too. Shazam integration is awesome and I use Siri constantly for reminders.
No computer has ever recognized my voice well. In a quiet room. Congrats on being understood by Siri. Not everyone is.

Siri? mem....

Siri used to be awful. Now it is just bad. I rarely use it and when I do I find it to be a pain in the backside. So if Samsung wants to buy company that powers Siri, well, good riddance.

Apple doing it "in house".....can anyone say "maps"? That was really successful /Sarcasm
People keep saying this, but Apple licenses the Maps data from outside. So, that's a pretty bad analogy, failing utterly to be similar to your premise.

i don't see apple asking a third party company developing a feature such as Siri for them and letting them go so easily to a competitor such as samsung

there might be some kind of very restricted contract preventing this

Does this really matter? Nuance has contracts with Microsoft and Apple that probably extend into years. Samsung cannot shut them down or deny service to competitors who have contracted just like Samsung will not deny selling displays and components to Apple.

This is probably good because it forces Apple to accelerate their in-house Siri efforts just like they were pressured into doing their own Maps when Google started growing and stealing too much to comfortably work with.

No computer has ever recognized my voice well. In a quiet room. Congrats on being understood by Siri. Not everyone is.

I get that - unlike the person I quoted, I never claimed EVERYONE felt on way or the other.

Annunciate relatively well and you'll be understood by Siri even in a relatively noisy room.

Point being, she's come a long way since being introduced on the 4S. Those who are speaking based on experience 2-3 years ago are doing themselves a disservice.

Instead of being Happy for Apple to be a small company that made it. it's everyone versus Apple because they made it! OMG! haters everywhere! So, what's the message here? follow your dreams and DIE!!!! ???

No one dislikes Apple.. that would be weird.. now the fanboys.. that is another matter.. crazed religious zealots are less biased than some of the craps I read..

For example, what page of the Apple handbook do you get to when it tells you you have to blindly hate MS, Google and Samsung.. and even if its a case of cutting your nose off to spite your face.. to refuse to use their products in fear that you are being disloyal to your Apple brethren. This behaviour is the reason Apple gets a bad press. Bar that they are just a tech firm making slightly above average gear..

oh boy....they are really into this copying game.
;)

Siri : How's the weather like ?
Sorry, your Samsung device was not recognized...change it and try again

Stupid comments are stupid.

That seems like a stupid acquisition to make.

Nuance Communications has a market cap of about $6 billion, so purchasing the company may cost $7-$8 billion - and this is for a company that makes no money. They actually lost $115 million last year.

And seeing as how Samsung already partners with them, I don't see any reason for Samsung to make this acquisition. It seems like nothing more than an attempt by Samsung to get Apple more reliant on them. But $7-$8 billion is an awful lot of money to spent on that, given that Apple has been working on developing their own internal Nuance alternative for a while now.

Maybe, just maybe they know something you don't.

Good. If this happens Apple may actually end up with using with a better voice recognition engine. Siri is dead last these days when put next to what Microsoft and Google have to offer.

I mean if you are going to partner with a company and then decide to break ties and move development in-house it only makes sense for Nuance to look to sell to the closest competitor.

Of course the only reason why Samsung is looking at this is they think they might be able to get Apple into some crippling licensing agreement, but I am sure that by the time Samsung owns Nuance, Apple will use their own proprietary technology.

Do you have a source for that?
