What about people who need glasses. They can’t take them off in inappropriate situations.
My thoughts too since I wear real glasses not sure how places will "enforce" in public yet privacy required areas
*basic examples financial institutions, non-public facing work place, gym locker rooms, restrooms etc....

With respect, in my opinion if you wear these or any similar glasses, you’re a creep.
Totally agree

If Apple doesn't have compelling answers to the issues with smart glasses, they shouldn't release such a product themselves.

Probably unpopular opinion, as these do have good use cases (even for me) -- but the bad PR and behavior could drown out all of the good.

Unless things like this include AR I really cant figure out what the point is outside of being a weird creep videoing everyone all the time

Like, camera aside, everything else can be done with airpods and let you not be a jackass to everyone around you by filming all the time.

The only excuse for a camera is AR

They may market that as the main selling point but they'll keep on ignoring reality. Most reviews of all the Meta and similar products say the main selling points are

  1. They are decent glasses for vision correction or sun protection.
  2. They are surprisingly convenient headphones.
  3. They are a discrete and hands free camera.
Except literally no one wants randos to have discrete hands free cameras everywhere 🤷‍♂️

Wait until evil Musk gets in the game... introducing the new {insert tech company} Locutus eyeglasses featuring Elon Musk designed neural brain implants that connect you to everything all at once. Complete with subliminal indoctinations to love Elon and maybe DJT if they're still pals.

Like I said years ago, people will stop using handheld devices around 2027-2028. Kids in 2030s will look back at us laughing how could we even walk and type / play / watch videos on a so called phone at the same time.
Counterpoint: no way these or anything like them are allowed in schools, so kids at least wont be using them much.

My wife’s a teacher, there’s already enough problems with cell phones that her school, starting next year, along with many many others, is banning them during the day

AR specs with an outward facing camera that is used only for processing scene information and which cannot be recorded, for privacy reasons. That's what we need. AR that can give me useful stuff based on what I can see is potentially very useful. AR that can take covert videos or pictures is an invasion of privacy. Same for the microphone: listen to conversations and process them, as my assistant, and use them to give me useful contextual data, even do translation. But do not record or transcribe covertly.

What is the point of the glasses if there is no display? Unless it's prescription, and I'm sure that would be a hot item.

What's the gimmick?

If it had a HUD, with a light design, people would go nuts for it, in spite of the risks, which along with AI are already there.

The next big thing could be this. That is if it can be done, which is unknown

It feels like tech companies in general are shoving AI and wearables down our throats. Most people I know, including myself don't give a s**t about it about either one.

This creepy tech is a dead end.

Anything being pushed by Zuckerberg is something I want no part of.
Its pushed by Zuck because he tries like forever to replace the iPhone to have more control. He started with his own phone, VR, glasses and nothing sticks. Open AI has the same problem and what they end up doing? A phone. The smartphone is already peak.

They missed with the vision pro. that's for sure. See what they come up with for their glasses. With Ternus at the helm, he might go, meh...we are not going to bother with this segment. He didn't want the AVP in the first place.
How did they miss? They set expectations, built based on them, and sold around their expected numbers making good profit in the process. Its like saying the mac studio is a failure because the mini sells way more.

Samsung will discontinue this before Apple ships anything.
Interesting comment. Samsung is on their 7th version of a folding phone. Not discontinued. Samsung has made large phones (Note) before most everyone and still do. I own 1 Samsung product, Fold 7, and multiple Apple products. I don't get this line of thinking.

I’m sure Samsung’s effort will be a runaway success. After all, everyone is raving about using [looks down at notes] Bixby on their [looks down again] Galaxy Buds

I think the market for these glasses is limited. There’s an initial novelty of them, then there are content creators who may use them but that’s only a small segment of the population. After a while I see them ending up in people’s drawer, rarely used again. They’re not as useful as AirPods or a smartwatch, and nowhere near the essential value that a smartphone has. But it’s cool to see these companies trying to find the next iPhone. I just don’t see this as being it.

Does anyone really care what Samsung does? It's always half‑assed, never well supported, and Apple always does it better. And that's just reality, not being partisan. I'm about to try the Nuance hearing‑aid glasses, which are vaguely similar, except that the frames incorporate a decent built‑in hearing aid. I'm hoping the Apple ones might integrate this level of functionality.

I don’t know what the future holds for this type of device, but apple wasn’t the first personal computer, macbook wasn’t the first laptop, iPod wasn’t the first mp3 player, iPhone wasn’t the first smartphone, iPad wasn’t the first tablet, apple watch wasn’t the first smart watch, why would they start worrying about the first to market 50 years in?

Will be an interesting event. Looking forward to both foldables from Samsung along with the new glasses. Waiting to hear its price too.
