September 2018 I got myself a Samsung Galaxy A8. Lately I experience a strange problem. When I call someone the first seconds they do not hear me. After a while it gets better and they seem to understand me, not perfectly though. Is the device trash ready or is it software? The device discharges pretty fast too.
 
Does it have a lot of apps installed? The A8 still uses eMMC storage, so it can get really laggy. But it could also be the carrier itself. Is the problem consistent, or just happen once in a while?

Things I would try:
- restart the phone
- uninstall unneeded apps
- update the stock apps from the Galaxy store

It happens all the time. I have already freed up some storage space. Restart does not help. The Galaxy Store thing I did not try yet. Does Samsung not automatically update the stock apps? I do install the huge updates when the device asks to. Not sure what gets updated then next to security and the OS.
 
Check if you are using wifi calling. I've found that calling over a slow wifi network causes a delay.

I don't think the stock OEM apps auto update. If you want to check for mass updates in the Galaxy Store, you have to have a Samsung account. If you don't have a Samsung account (or you don't want to create one), you have to go to each app, go into their settings/about, and then it will check if there's an update or not. Eg. Phone app, Settings, About Phone.

Also, make sure you update the phone to the latest available firmware. The carrier can be an issue as well. Try different carriers, or switch to 3G. There are too many variables. Eg. kind of apps you have installed, whether the phone is rooted or not, etc etc. Worst case is to reset the phone to factory and see if the lag is still there.

However, in the end, it's an old phone. Any smartphone using eMMC will lag as eMMC cannot do read and write to the storage at the same time. It can only do one or the other, meaning simple things in a multi-tasking OS like Android can make it crawl really quickly. This is why I would avoid any phone that is still using eMMC. I feel it's time for you to upgrade. I'd suggest the Galaxy A52.

I was looking at the 4G model or is the 5G much better? Not interested in the 4 vs 5g as I am mostly at home nowadays.

I own it 2 years now. Not old to me...
