These devices always fail. See the laptop market. The form factor of a phone and laptop is set and perfect. Everything else will fail.
People said the same thing when the iPhone and the iPad were released though. I'm not saying tri-folds are going to last, but regular single fold book-style foldables are still around and their sales are increasing.

Form factors don’t ‘fail’ because they’re different. They fail when their trade offs outweigh their benefits. The Tri Fold isn’t proof innovation doesn’t work it’s proof this version doesn’t.

...an alarm that alerts the user if it's folded incorrectly.

A $2,000+ device that can be "folded incorrectly" sounds suspiciously like an engineering fail, and is certainly a user experience fail.
This is coming from the company that allowed the S-Pen to be put into the storage slot the wrong way, which made it almost impossible to remove again.

I think the Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold is a proof-of-concept product more than anything else. If not, then the project shows there is a limit to what consumers - even well-heeled consumers - will pay for a phone.

The high cost for a device like that simply cannot justify the additional capability. One can buy a superior tablet computer for a third of the price and the only loss is a little portability and perhaps bragging rights.

Well it was a 100% success in its objectives. Tech demo that completely sold out due to high demand, and that people are prepared to pay thousands for a device like this.
